Lack of coaching I think will force us to make changes in the offseason.

Mirando has no business being here. We need someone who knows how the hell to coach WR's because right now I think they are the biggest weakness on the team. Bad OL or not, Relf had some throws today on the money today that only WRs can be blamed for messing up. Melvin Smith needs to probably be gone. We need a younger, fresher, more in your face type of attitude at the cornerback position.

We NEED a special teams coach that isn't named Dan Mullen. It just isn't working for Dan right now. Focus on being a head coach, and let someone else constantly focus on special teams. It was a great idea whenhe came here, but let someone else concentrate on ST whilehe focuses on getting this team back in gear, more specifically the offense. I might could make a case for Koenning, but I'm not ready to do that just yet. But if the offense continues in this pattern and we don't adjust, I think he has to be on the hot seat.

I will say this too. 3 DC's and 3 schemes in 3 years. They look pretty decent right now. Offense has the same OC and same gameplan under Mullen and Koenning, and they look like hell. That doesn't sit well with me.

back when I guess we actually used a bagman. Don't think we need a bagman to recruit at our current level.

Is that part of the overallscheme, or is that a choice made by Smith? I just don't understand why we play so far off the LOS. Our corners and safeties usually do a pretty good job of not giving up the big play and getting picks when there is an opportunity. Banks and Broomfield is probably the best CB tandem we've had in a while.

Butwith the secondary being a strength of ours, I don't understand why we don't let them showcase themselves more.Let them man up outside, put some pressure on the QB with some heavier blitzes, and see if we can make teams make big mistakes. Banks showed today a few times he can breaka passup in man coverage. I think the defense as a whole is doing well, but we have to put some pressure on the QB. Teams have been able to pick up a bunch of yards on 1st down this year hitting us on those quick passes, so I wish we would change something.

on the CB's, but it also provides an opportunity to read and intercept the football (which we do effectively) and still don't allow a certainty of scoring.

I remember him talking after the LSU game - I think he said something like "we've got two great CBs... maybe we should let them play a little tighter." Also believe he said it frustrated the CBs to play like that.<div>
</div><div>Likely a decision made by Wilson (just like Diaz last year).</div>

Melvin coached our DB's in the 90's when we played in-your-17'ing-face man coverage 75?% of the time. Anything we do on D is because the HC or DC wants it that way

I know almost nothing about MSU teams in the 90's and early 2000's. I had no idea that's what we did back then when he was here. All I know is what I've seen over the last few years, and that is we play further off the LOS than most any other team I've ever seen.

But I asked the question because with as young and inexperienced Diaz and Wilson are, I wasn't sure how much control Smith had over his own unit within the philosophy of the DC's scheme.

But I wasn't sure if because Melvin was so experienced and since this was Wilson's first gig that Melvin might have a bit more input on what his position does within the scheme of the defense.

But I really don't worry much about the defense right now. I guess if the secondary continues to get picks and laybig hits, there really isn't much else they can do. They are the best unit on the field rightnow, so until they start having some major problems, I guess I can't really criticize what they are doing. However, I do think they could be allowed a little more one on ones with us bringing some more pressure. We got to Murray a few times and he didn't have his best passing day because of it. I would love to see that some more week to week.

Yes, it IS the scheme we run. My high school team's D is has the same scheme. During the coaches clinic I got a chance to meet Wilson & he drew up 4 defensive plays that we implemented and we run. The plays WORK it allows ur CBs time to jump stips & screen plays to make plays for INTs. But as he said "u gotta have guys that can close". We have never been so good defensively since i've been here thanks to that scheme. But the biggest thing w/ the scheme (as state & state found out vs. auburn & memphis) ur LBs better do 2 things 1.) Better maintain gap integrity (we couldn't keep outside containment vs auburn) and 2.) They better tackle WELL! Where I coach we've got more tackles for loss this year (at this point 4-2) than we did ALL of last year. Now in our 2 losses we couldn't keep outside contain & were torched for HUGE runs. The D is not the problem w/ state. I'm concerned that Relf is hurt & Mullen is affraid to play Tyler or Dylan from start to finish & bring Relf in much like he did Tebow there last championship year.I said in another thread the WRs are NOT making plays. Is ut Mirando's fault? Idk, maybe. But we have gotta do something. With this team if something doesn't change, I see maybe 6 wins those being all OOC games & either the Bears or maybe S.C. SC didnt look good, if Georgia played SC again tod as y they'd beat the hell outta the gamecocks. That D line was awesome today! How many times have u EVER seen Adduson get thrown around like he did in thatsack? Man that was brutal!

I thought the defense played well. I thought we got much more pressure on the quarterback than in previous games. Even in the first half we were hitting Murray. He did hit several slant patterns but he was still getting hit.
I think Slay needs to be on the field. I think he may have taken Broomfield's spot for good. I'm still disappointed in Mitchell. He has yet to show many anything this year. We are better with Bonner and Whitley at safety. I think the secondary is very solid with Banks, Slay, Bonner, and Whitley. Still very thin at linebacker and DE. Looks like we are getting a lot of young guys into the rotation at DT. Jones and Virges getting some looks there.

I'm not sure how much Broomfield played today but I did notice that Georgia was throwing at Banks pretty often. Not sure if this had to do with feeling that they could pick on Banks or if that was just Murray's prefered receiver.
I thought Banks was in pretty good position on the slants but Murray was putting it on the money early on in the game. We were hitting Mrray on these plays but he was getting the pass off. However, the hits may have had an effect later in the game. He didn't seem to be as sharp as the game went on.

Coach34, you are exactly right, my friend! Wilson tries to give Mullen exactly what he demands. Melvin tries to give Wilson what he asks. Melvin is a damn good coach, both X&O's and he's a player's coach. No other Coach on staff likes being a bulldog more!
