No, he’s not winning the Heisman and I haven’t heard anybody talking about him putting himself into the Heisman conversation. However, I did hear or read several commentators since the game over Oklahoma comment that he is playing Heisman caliber football right now.

It would be interesting to see if he finishes out the season playing at the level he has played the last few games if he at least gets himself in the conversation. The way he played against Oklahoma, he looks like the best player in college football and not particularly close.

I had sent the previous thread. There’s not really a scenario for him to come back. If he plays well enough to return, then he probably gets drafted. If he doesn’t play well enough to get drafted, then we probably wouldn’t want him back. But I could maybe see a scenario where if we retain Briles, then he could return to make a run at the Heisman but again I think he’s probably very draftable at that point anyway and would go for the draft.

I could see the League wanting him as a TE this year but not as a QB.
Will he be like Tebow and only want to play as a QB? I really don't know but his decision making has to speed up to be a top QB in the league.

Imo he would be smarter to stay. There's more upside than downside to be had if he's planning to stick only at QB. I think it has been very bittersweet with him last last 3 years.... If he could put it all together for one last run, it has the potential to be amazing. At the same time, I could find us fans ready to skin him alive if he just can't get his head on straight... That's also saying he's making millions to stay...

no doubt about it. When he threw a little caution to the wind and used those legs.....boy didn't the pass game open up a whole lot?
I was worried we would get and thought we were getting Clownyed a little bit in beginning of the year with LS....but he has turned it loose lately.
Turning it loose = making money son!

Made some great decisions. On both of the long TD balls, he could have chosen to run...and probably would have in the past...but in both cases he pulled up to complete long TD passes.

The pass to Black is one of the greatest plays in Gamecock football history. Just perfectly thrown deep strike.
NFL should only waste a high draft pick on him if they already have a good QB. He could be a Taysom Hill type player.

GMs are salivating over his 79-yard pass to Mazeo. The way he rolled out of that jailbreak blitz by OU was unreal.

It was a stunning play! Sellers makes some excellent throws on the run.

But just don't forget how absurdly fast those NFL defenses are. 😬

He has been playing at a high level lately. Who is playing better than Sellers right now? If he wants to win a Heisman he should transfer to a more prominent program next season where he will get a lot of press, UGA or OSU.

Heisman candidates will be on the top 5-10 ranked teams. We're not cracking that in regular season or unlikely without help. But when Sellers plays like he did against OU, it's very difficult to defend obviously and is elite qb company. Not perfect but completing most short and long passes and running for 10+ yards a clip. OU was coming at Sellers and spying him on that long td to Black. He eludes the blitz and gets ball off before the LB gets to him and launches the ball perfectly to Black in one on one coverage. Mazeo td was similar too-rolls out away from blitz and finds Mazeo down the field. DC's worst nightmare.

If he can finish the season out playing at this level, I can see him getting into the conversation.

There's not any particularly good team in college football this year. Miami is maybe the best by default, but they've needed considerable help from the refs against FSU and UNC.

There's not really that one player that's running away with it this year.

At this point, he could make good money staying another year (maybe more depending on where he was drafted) and improve his draft stock. He’s played his way into more money at Carolina the last few weeks. Also would have an opportunity to lead Carolina to a playoff run in a 24 team format.

He could also be injured or have a worse year next year if he stays. If he projects as a top three round pick, he should go.

Strictly money wise, I would say second round or better makes sense to go. Yes, he could always get hurt but he could get hurt in the league too. I’ve always felt like Sellers best option would be to sit under a professional qb and staff for a year or two to develop and learn. There’s something special about college ball though. He’s from Florence. Could realistically break almost all qb records passing and rushing, make a playoff run, and go down as one of the best players in South Carolina history.

I hope this is a year where players at some of the smaller schools get Heisman love.

For example...
The 5 players with the most passing yards play for Oregon State, Oklahoma State, North Texas, Florida Atlantic, and Memphis.
The 5 players with the most rushing yards play for North Texas, Boise State, Missouri, Navy, and Duke.

Tebow? Sellers is just about the opposite of Tebow in athletic ability.

He's currently in the Top 5 in the SEC for both passing and rushing.

He's an early 1st round QB as of today.

If you can get similar $$ in college and insure yourself against injury, there's no reason not to stay in college.

Far better gig than the NFL grind for most.

His brother will be back next year so maybe that will be a factor? If he had an entire season playing like this we would be in the Top 10 if the rest of the team is as good next year as they are right now. He would be a Heisman candidate in that case. Hopefully Briles, Clements, White, et al will be here. Looks like the chemistry is very good overall.

He'll have to come back next year and the sports information department will have to start banging the drum for him in the summer. Then, he'll have to play his guts out next season and us win at least 11 games for him to win it. Not throwing two picks even in his decent games would be helpful also.

Update: There are actually people putting that into print now. I saw one earlier today with a list compiled by a couple of voters who have him in their Top 10 and there's also this one - link - which mentions him, albeit not as high on the list.

I think everyone needs to remember that most of this type content is created to drive eyeballs and not necessarily based on sound reasoning.

I don't agree. He makes to many stupid mistakes. I'm not saying he can't be great, but most of last year and at the first of this one, everyone on the board agreed he needed to go.... I can't see someone taking a chance in the first round unless he continues to ball out the rest of the year, and then it would be very late round... But that's my opinion.

To me it seemed destined a WR would win, but losing Sayin really hurts Jeremiah Smith. Miami plays ND this weekend, so Mensah and Toney get their shot to solidify the Heisman hype.
Outside of that, you have Drew Mestemaker. But his problem is similar to ours with their team record. Also they have a bad loss to Tulsa.
This level of play continues and we win, he will get an invite. Win these next 2, UGA game will be INSANE, with a huge opportunity for him.

It's the silly mistakes that resonate the most with me if I'm an NFL GM. Each week LS will be facing defenses coached by guys better than Venables with faster, smarter players at each position.

LS has every intangible an NFL team wants, but if I'm drafting him as a QB, I need to see a consistent pattern of good decision making in high pressure situations. It feels like he's beginning to turn that corner.

Keep in mind, the OL is full of transfers who won't be here next season. He could do all of the things you list, and he could be back to running for his life with a new OL.

He took a totally revamped OL made up of players who had never played together and has them playing solid ball.

Some coaches have it.

A QB with 3 losses isn't winning the Heisman, but I think he could work his way into the conversation if he is able to maintain his level of play for the final 4 games. It works in his favor that there is no dominant team or player this year.
Not arguing that-was just posting positive press. If he continues to play like he did against OU he enters the conversation, yes. But still a longshot.

And Whammy Ward had a bunch of players playing solid ball and then the next year had new guys and they sucked. Does this tell us the players were so good even he couldn't screw it up?
So again, where does the credit lie? Players? Coach? Combination? I land on the last one.

My experiences tell me you don't get great play out of sub-par players. A great coach can get more out of less but still ain't making chicken salad out of chicken doodie.
