What do you think about this 7A matchup?

How does it play out and why?

Really like that Friar mascot

This should be a real good game. LZ has obviously stepped it up since the Montini game but I like Fenwicks QB and overall speed in this one!

I'm with you Gene. LZ really playing well especially on D,... but I like Fenwick in this one. So far my 7A bracket going mostly to plan I think.

Agree. Montini ha

Agree. Both have really improved after slow starts. Both playing better defensively. Good matchup of Montini spread O vs LZ stingy D.

Yah because week 2 results have a ton to do with week 11 games. I think I read that somewhere once.
I also read somewhere that fenwick did not get smaller or slower in the past nine weeks. Unless LZ grew their linemen and found some magic speed pill, not sure they will handle friar. Just my observation watching bronco play both teams.

How does this version of the vaunted LZ defense stack up to Loyola's? Fenwick had some issues with them earlier in the year. May be a good measuring stick.

Sounds to me like we have another poster that hasn't watched LZ and isn't too familiar with their typical roster. Welp, guess we shall see.

I'm calling this game a pick 'em.

Week 2 or 3 mean nothing at this point. Montini is a different team, LZ is a different team. The edge might be that Fenwick hasn't changed much, which is good for Fenwick, since they cleaned up this year outside of LA game.

And you wouldn't be biased, since LZ is in your former coverage area, right? You are above that sort of thing.

No PJ just seeing the same old rhetoric we see every year about LZ in the playoffs. Too small, not fast enough, not tough enough. Just kinds makes me laugh.

Newt, have you seen fenwick play a game? I have seen both teams in person play.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

After seeing both of these teams in person, I can say that Fenwick did not play to their potential on Sat. I believe they played down to Rockton's level for 3 quarters.

With that being said it is evident that when 23 is not in the game for Fenwick, their offense becomes stagnant. LZ has seen two QBs that I believe are better high school football players than Keller (Stevie and Zion). He is good but takes advantage of the two giant pass catching threats he has (who wouldn't, seriously).

As far as size, LZ will roll out a 6'3" 265 lbs Nose and 6'3" 235 lbs DE as well as two book end 6'5" 250 lbs OT. Their center is 6'2" 250 and they have size at the MLB and FS position. So the match up problem on the line is much more fiction than reality. This is not your typical undersized LZ team that we saw get beat by Mt. Carmel in 2013.

As for the WRs that Fenwick has, who can match up with that? Seriously, only Loyola.

This is the game of the week in 7A. I think most people will be surprised at the final score of this one.

If you have not had a chance to see Jack Sanborn play for LZ, this as good a week as ever. He might be one of, if not the most, exciting players in the Illinois Junior class.

Love the passion on the thread, lets keep it classy shall we.

Fenwick looked mediocre.

Hononegah looked impressive.
Not nearly impressive as Princess Hononegah, but impressive nonetheless.

Knowing how upset a friend of mine gets when I jab at the warrior princess, this got me laughing.

Rockton looked better than I expected them to look, after watching the beat down of Harlem (Harlem beat Hon) the night before. If they completed some of those throws to the #2 WR for first downs that game could have ended up a lot closer. The middle of Fenwicks D was exposed a few times for big gains.

Hono's QB was suspended for 3 games. Was back for weeks 9-10, was out 6-8. They probably finish 7-2 instead of 5-4 if he doesn't get in trouble.

Agree on Sanborn being one of the best players in the state. He is THE best player at the LB position LZ has ever had, no doubt. Problem? He is sick and will miss tomorrow's game. Ouch. Somebody at LZ is really going to have to step up big time . . .

Better than the guy that went to syracuse? Also do you really want to post that on here? Seems like sensitive information to be posting.

yeah I read that in the Daily Herald.. total bummer. feel so bad for the kid. But it's very dangerous playing with Mono - one wrong hit with an enlarged spleen and very very bad things can happen.

That said - I'm sure he is a great player - but LZ has had some amazing LBer's. Wasn't JJ Raffelson on the NFL draft boards until he had to hang up the cleats due to all the Elbow/Arm surgeries?

I have seen all of the D1 LBs that LZ has been blessed with over the years.

Raffelson, Coleman, Lynn, Moskal and now Sanborn.

All different players in their own way. Lynn is being looked at by NFL teams for next years draft. JJ was until his injury history caught up with him. With all that being said, Sanborn is the most explosive and diverse LB that LZ has ever had. In addition to his play, he is the most recruited player at LZ over the last 10 years. This kid is special.

True they have had good ones, Raffelson, Moskal, Lynn, etc., but Sanborn is only a junior and already is a four star recruit. He is ahead of those guys at the junior year level anyway. He looks like he could playing big ten football right now. There is a reason why Wisconsin, Iowa, etc. want him. He will have a lot more offers. Regarding tomorrow, it is not all gloom and doom, one player does not make up an entire defense, and they have very good players at a lot of positions. e.g., outside LB Ryan Mcgeever (29) deserves all state recognition this year IMO. He has been a force--he has made a ton of stops behind the line of scrimmage all year. Three year starter. All over the field.

Anyone know what the deal was with the HC on "administrative leave" for this game?
