He didn't provide a reason for his resignation likely means the AD asked him to step down because of further NCAA sanctions.

He has departed from UCLA, Kansas, and SMU when all three were on probation. Classy guy.

He's a little overrated as a coach to me. Good riddance. Hopefully SMU doesn't get screwed because their kids are good players and they are entertaining.

What amazes me about him is he keeps on getting hired and hired. I don't care about how much basketball he knows he's poison. No respect for him at all. Even parts unc nation sees this. That's pretty bad when you own turn on you and have no respect for you. Just for my knowledge is his jersey # hanging in the rafters at the Dean Dome. OFC

Olympic Gold Medal got him his jersey in the rafters. Rashad McCants has his jersey honored as well. Two of the finest.

I think forte has his up there also. One player that puzzles me who has his number in the rafters but not retired is charlie scott. He was an amazing and talented player. All-American and averaged in the high 20's as a senior. I was really happy he was gone. At one time he was considered by many as the greatest tar heel ever. Maybe unc has special requirements also to have their jersey retired. Scott never won a national championship. OFC

Since the 1954-1955 season, UNC has had at least one player on the team who would later have his jersey retired/honored - except for the 2002 team. That sort of excellence is unparalleled. #dynasty

Have to be named national player of the year to get it retired.

Thanks. He was a great player and it's a shame it's not there but just like Duke there are certain criteria to be met and there should be no exceptions. saw him play a lot on t.v. and like I previously said I was very happy to see him graduate. Had a great career in the NBA also. As you know I like a lot of D.I. guys do take a look over at thr and I never see anything about charlie or Bobby Jones, cunningham, walter davis and others. phil ford pops up every now and then. There was BB at unc before michael jordan. We tend to be the same way over here but I won't let these forget there was a Duke before Coach K. OFC

Does that imply that, other than 2002, UNC hasn't gone four years without a national player of the year since 1954?

What's the distinction between retired and honored?
You have to be one of the following for an honored jersey:

-MVP of a National Championship winning team
-Member of a Gold Medal Winning Olympic Team
-First or second-team All America
-ACC Player of the Year
-NCAA Tournament MOP
