10 furlong GI in under two minutes, is impressive. What's not impressive, is who she beat, and how she beat them..rough quarter in :22, :23, :24, :26, 25..they went faster earlier, and she sat in the garden spot while Bayern--who hadn't won since last November's BCC and was retired after this race--and Midnight Storm (bow-wow) dueled and both were toast before the turn which was where she made her move on them.

Frankly, she's never ran against these types of horses before. I don't know if she can handle Pharoh's sustained pace, and then try and hold off Tonalist who may get the hood, maybe Frosted in there too, and then late closers Keen Ice and Honor Code who both will be rolling fast on what might be an honest pace. Keeneland has not been a friend to speed this meet. Let's make sure to pay attention if they're watering the track Saturday, and if the harrow it...they tune that track up, AP in the 4 could just go out on his own.

You may as well be speaking a foreign language to cawood. He doesn't have a clue what you said. Now if you were to post videos, quotes, and a slew of hyperbole, he would be all over it.

No matter what happens from here till tomorrow, she’s the best that I’ve ever sat on, or ever will sit on. Anything. Grass. Dirt. Sprint. I don’t care."

Says a lot considering he was the regular pilot for Silver Charm.

And don't get me wrong, she's a tough mare, and can definitely win this thing. Her outside post will help, and she's an "A" on the horizontals.

Alright, so can someone explain what the hell Calipari was drawing then? He drew AP 9th. AP is in the 4 hole, and was before Cal drew anything. #racingfordummies

Stack of papers in no order and then little balls with numbers on them in a bottle. Kind of like the lottery. Pull a paper with the horses name on it and pull a ball from the bottle. That horse gets the post position of the number on the ball. AP was the 9th piece of paper chosen and the corresponding ball had 4 on it.

Sorry, bud…you’re out of your league talking ponies with me. When you have a family member who was the clerk of scales at Keeneland and Churchill, another who was a successful jockey for many years, and learned TONS from each, then get back with me. Oh, and I guess I will add the fact I grew up around the horse sales and also w/ one of the biggest horse transportation companies around.

Go blow Tiger's fathead poster you have on your ceiling.

Stick to Con Air posters and Bruce Springsteen.

Clerk of scales at Keeneland, LOL. You're a joke man.

I trust Gary Stevens and these are his words:

“It was the best performance of any horse I’ve ridden – by far. She’s in her own league.”

These words tumbled from the lips of Gary Stevens, perched at the foot of the Santa Anita grandstand, while he watched the sun push clear of the bright crimson slab of the San Gabriel Mountains facing us.

The jockey’s renown for overstatement isn’t lost on him. “People say, ‘oh, it’s Gary Stevens, the last horse he rode is the best horse he ever rode, blah blah blah.’” But he remains unrepentant.

“She’s in her own paddock,” he said. “She breaths different air to any horse I’ve ridden. No matter what happens from here till tomorrow, she’s the best that I’ve ever sat on, or ever will sit on. Anything. Grass. Dirt. Sprint. I don’t care."

Every horse he rides is the best ever as it notes. He's probably the worst ever about that.

That's one thing that is often lost in horse racing ... the overall, aggregate best often matters less than who was best on that day, got the best trip/setup, etc.

I am pulling for AP but Beholder deserves respect and rightfully so.

So all you experts, tell me how the Classic shapes up to be run? Seems to me (admitted amateur, who used to gamble quite a bit) that given the recent workouts and the 4 hole, AP will go to the lead for sure. And from way outside, I would not be surprised to see Beholder hook up early with him.

If they burn each other up, sets up a closer for an upset and a big payday, which is how I think I am betting. Certainly not betting the 6-5 in a race this talented. What about the foreign horse (Gleneagles, I think??). I am looking for a live longshot, or maybe two to get creative.

Beholder will be coming from behind so they won't burn each other up. Take a look at honor code.

Far from an expert, but Beholder is a stalker (not one to run too far behind) who likes to sit just off the pace. She's breaking from the 10 hole, the gate will be positioned just about even with the top of the stretch. and she has one horse, Speed Roller to her inside, who will probably go for the lead. That's almost a 1/4 mile for her to get in race position.

If you want to try and predict: SR and AP go out, Beholder breaks sharp, and clears the closer/off the pace types to her left, and she ends up in the garden again. Stevens will go for the repeat trip he got in the PC, but they will be running against much better stock Saturday. jmo.

Of course the odds of that happening are up there with Arcangues..but how many times have we seen horses that prefer to lay back/stalk end up on/near the lead? I think JV has Tonalist up a little closer than normal--with his post, may not have a choice-- might see Effinex who ran closer in the JCGC be up there, as well as Frosted, who got a nice draw, be there in that upper mid-pack area.

Gleneagles was obviously pointed to this race, has top notch connections, and is a multiple GI winner. But, he'll be trying two things for the first time Saturday: dirt, and ten furlongs. Nice horse, but he's not Giant's Causeway. jmo

Of course she does. She's a beast. If she runs back to her last race she wins. Period.
As a gambler though I"m not looking to play her or AP at their respective odds though. I think they both have some questions and there are others in here that can win.

Beholder has been scratched. She was bleeding after a gallop, and she's out of the Classic.

Mandella admits that Beholder "Got worked up on the plane coming here and made herself sick."

Also says they'll still plan on bringing her back next year.

Sorry, Cawood

Stinks about Beholder but she just can't ship. I think I like Tonalist at this point. Glen Eagles is hard to figure out. First time on dirt and first time more than a mile. I trust Aidan O'Brien but it seems weird. Tonalist and Honor Code exacta box.

I really like honor code. How do you all feel about ImaChatterBox drawing the 1 position? I was high on that horse until the draw. 14 horse field he's gonna burn his energy early getting to the front or get trapped on the rail.

Still on the fence with her, but there's a lot to like, imo. Assuming she breaks well, she's shown recently she can rate, so gunning her early isnt necessary. The speed is obviously to her right, and she could be in good position into the first turn. Geroux is a good fit, and Larry Jones is ALWAYS dangerous with his female runners.

There is a ton of pace in the Distaff. Same for the Dirt Mile. I think Got Lucky might be the single in my Pick 4 ticket in the Distaff. Sure looks like a pace meltdown to me. If I had more money I would include I'm a Chatterbox. I'll be deep in the Dirt Mile too. Liam's Map is far away the best horse but 6 horses want the lead in that race. Go with the Euros in the 2 turf races. Sheer genius in taking them in the turf races I know.

Casse's horse blew up almost all of my P3 and P4 tix (did hit a P3).

But screwed up the Distaff. Had it Curalina/Maria/StellarWind. So, my top 3 ran top 3 but I messed up my betting and managed to miss the tri and ex. Normally I'll box my top 3 in a tri and ex, and then I'll do a bunch of wheels on top of that. For some reason I only wheeled that race and had Stellar Wind only in the 3rd spot. I don't know why I did that. Think I just overlooked it. Big mistake. For $9 could have been paid $430. Smh.

Just saw that Bobby Flay, Jim Rome, and slick Rick are celebrity ambassadors. More of a butthole convention in my opinion.

Bobby Flay was at the drawing on Monday. He comes out to keeneland every year. I know many people that have met him and they all say he is a huge jerk.

As my bank account will attest after this weekend sometimes I don't think I know anything about handicapping horse racing. What I do know is greatness when I see it and that was never a race. That was fun to watch. He caught a bit of a break with Smooth Roller scratching but still. SR was the only horse that could have pushed him up front early. Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
