what is the reasoning behind have a 1A and a 1AA? Is it just so more schools can say they won a state championship? No other sports have this.

The small 1A schools were whining for many years about not being able to get a trophy. Before 1985, the 1A classification had around 30 schools, only about 5 or 6 had decent squads. When the NCHSAA started an even 25/25/25/25 split, they started whining because all of a sudden they had 80 teams in 1A. They finally got their wish in 2001 when 1A subdivided. In 2002, 2A, 3A, and 4A started subdividing.

I think the complaining wasn't as much that they had to compete against a bunch of schools all of a sudden, but that they had to compete against a bunch of schools two and three times their size all of a sudden. Also worth noting for all the "nobody cares about the SMC's little rings" folks that from 1985 to 2000, the SMC still won over half the titles (9 of 16).

To say that small 1a is trash because only a few are competitive is just ignorant. There are 2-3 schools that dominate every year in every class. Think Mallard Creek, Butler, Scotland and Wake in 4a, Crest, Weddington, Reynolds in 3a, Shelby, Hibriten, Reidsville, Wallace Rose Hill in 2a, Tarboro, Mount Airy, Murphy, Mitchell in 1a... They each play schools that are their size. Of course a 3a school with 1500 will be better than a 1a with 500 (except Tarboro)

The difference is the rest of the teams are good as well. Not a bunch of 1-9 or 2-8 teams. I was also talking about 1A, not 1AA. Huge difference in the two

I know there is a huge difference. Mitchell has been in both, went deep in both. But, with the exception of Tarboro, there is a big difference between 1aa and 2a. The lines become more blurred after that, but with 1a you have schools from 100-500 students. 1aa-3aa it is a difference of 1-200 in size. 25% split with split classes would help, or 30/20/20/30 and only split 1a and 4a would also be better.
