Who does Pope hire to be his assistants. Does he go get Scott Padgett from South Carolina? Would Allen Edward’s be a decent assistant candidate since he was a former teammate as well? We need an ace recruiter or two on the staff. Who can be Popes version of Vince Marrow?

Roster:
Can Pope convince Reed to stay and be the key piece to build his first team around? Can Pope convince Thiero and Big Z to stay. Could Pope be a major influence on Z as a big man who played a very similar game.

Who do we get from the portal? Who else stays? Does Perry stay?

An all former UK player staff would be crazy. Padgett would be in for sure. Not sure who else.

I think he has to be one of the first people you call. He’s got a rough past for someone like Mitch but you need some star power to recruit with. My only hesitation is would Rondo play nice with Pope and be ok not being in charge? If so, bring him in and he’s the lead recruiter and leader of guard development.

I like the idea of brining Robic for defense. If not Robic someone like him who is a good defensive mind. The third spot could go to Padgett or another recruiter. I think Pope covers offense well enough. Maybe bringing in a wing development focused assistant?

I don't personally see Reed and Z staying roster-wise.
Z I’m more skeptical about. Figure he’s gone, but the Sheppard/Pope connection might be strong enough to keep Reed in the fold another year. I honestly don’t think Reed is desperate to cash in just yet. He can make crazy NIL money and be an All-American, POY candidate by staying. He could tell Andy Beshear “Move over, I rule this state now”.

I personally don't love having an all-UK roster. I think you need more diversity than that, specifically, guys from other areas of college basketball, in locations that might offer some other recruiting options. I think we need at least one home run assistant/recruiter. We're talking a guy who is good enough to get his own HC job in a few years.

That's the hope.

Same names that are possible and make sense: Nazr Mohammed (in one role or another), Scott Padgett (current asst at MissSt), and Allen Edwards (current asst at UMASS)

From BYU: Kahil Fennel spent time as an asst at Louisville, and Nick Robinson spent time as an assistant at both Stanford and LSU. So those clearly make sense as well

Players: Will be interesting to see if Pope's hire has any impact on portal guys like Jamal Mashburn's son. There's also quite a few players in the portal from Utah St that I can see Pope having connections to. There's a 3-star in the portal from BYU (Marcus Adams), but not sure if that's because he was leaving Pope or because he was leaving the school.

I think you keep Travis Perry, yes. I'm hoping for Big Z, and obviously hoping for Reed, but we'll have to see updated NBA projections for both.

He’ll want to bring a couple guys with him no doubt. His Associate Head Coach is Cody Feuger, no idea who that is. One of his guys just got a head coaching job. Nick Robinson has been with him for his whole BYU tenure. Robinson coached at Southern Utah for 4 seasons, compiling a 28-90 record 😳

Reggie Hanson? Wasn't he on Pitinos staff? Didn't he work with the big men?

As soon as the usual suspects get the tantrum over with,we can get down to business and talk round all.

Why are people adamant about bringing in Rondo? lol
I don't believe Rondo could pass a background check for Mitch. Probably zero chance he ever sits on UK's bench in any capacity. Just a hunch. He's reportedly quite the POS off the court.

I wish Hart, Burks, Reed, Z, and Thiero would stay. I think Reed's defense is a real liability as a prospective pro. In terms of $$, NIL would be a balm for his doubts.

I hope that contracts between coach and school could be ironed out this morning so that Pope could meet instanter with what's left of the roster and incoming kids. Quaintance, if he would look at it, would be a great fit for Pope's offense. He moves well and can pass. Cyril and Knox? Not so much. Richmond apparently isn't much of a shooter, but he's a great defender and rebounder for a 2. Fland will star wherever he goes. And Perry and Pope's offense look like hand-and-glove. But players with one foot out the door aren't what Pope has worked with before. My fear is that NIL and the portal have turned college basketball into a morass of vagabonds going from team to team. It would be better to be fully professional and restricted (both ways) by contract.

Random roster-related question: why hasn't DJ Wagner entered the portal or declared for the draft yet? You know he's following Cal if he doesn't foolishly enter the draft. There's 0% chance he stays at UK, so what's the reason for the delay? Not one person cares to read his Chat GPT-generated "Dear BBN" Instagram post.

Money would be my guess. Maybe a girl? At least that's if he's staying.

He should have no problem getting an assistant who has SEC recruiting experience.
We can bump the pay and it's UK not a football school.

Roster wise, Pope has a number of underclassmen that MAY want to follow him to UK from BYU:
  1. (Indirect Mormon)Traore 6-6/240 Sr averaged 10.9/5.2.
  2. (Indirect Mormon) Khalifa 6-11/270 average 5.7/3.7/4.0-ast (31.5% 3-pt on almost 100 attempts).
  3. (Direct Mormon) Knell 6-5/186 Sr averaged 10.6/ 3.4/ 38.5% 3-pt
  4. (Direct Mormon) Hall 6-4/ 196 Jr averaged 9.0/ 3.5/ 5.1-ast/ 35.9% 3-pt.
  5. Sheppard, probably a dream but a home run if Pope could make it happen.
  6. Z, I think he could thrive in that offense. Alot of people seem to think he goes to Fayetteville, I don't. I think with his personality and learning life in America he either stays at UK or goes a pro route.
  7. Perry, I think he sticks with UK.
  8. Burks, I think he sticks with UK.
  9. I think an uncommitted McNeeley could see a BIG fit at UK in Pope's offense.
  10. Pope has to hit portal ASAP and reel in 3-4 experienced transfers (Mashburn, Blackmon, Lawrence, Freeman, Aidoo, Oquendo 20+ppg against UK in 3-games, Huntley-Hatfield, Mark, Holloway, Abdur-Rahim, Ballo, Battle, Townsend 😉, Davis, Isaacs, Storr, etc) Alot to choose from!!
