It’s important to recognize that the grand majority of Northwestern basketball and football players are exceptions - they wouldn’t get in for academics alone, and likely wouldn’t get in with athletics as part of a wider ‘involvement’ package. They are subject to lower standards already. It’s just a matter of how low — and which recruits CCC gets exceptions to the lower, but still elevated, standards on.

I would propose lowering athletic admission standards to NCAA minimums — and giving CCC the rope to hang himself with if those minimum qualifiers can’t thrive academically. Football graduates everybody. I think all hoops recruits - even Vassar, especially Vassar - have graduated if they’ve stayed. A better athletic program makes for a better university — let them play!

As an aside, @Medill90
I hope your friend’s daughter gets in. And I hope someone paid for a few more standardized tests.

Has we had been an NIT team this year I was hearing CC was going to get some love from UCLA, there are those who think he would be a great face of the program there. No wi cant see them selling that narrative, dont even know if he would have interest but it is UCLA

UCLA isn't UCLA anymore.

NU is a big, physical conference and its average star rating is above three. The four stars that Collins has brought in are not big, physical kids and NU's overall star rating is average, there are seven Big Ten schools with higher averages and that doesn't include Iowa and Wisconsin.

Kopp is physical, but he's 6 6". Nance is 6 11" but his game can't be called physical. In conference, Law is decent on the perimeter but his game is not to body up. Falzon is average physically for a power forward but that is strictly on D and strictly when his guy brings him into the paint.

That leaves Benson as far as four stars. He's long, but so far hasn't shown the feet nor the power to clear out guys and be self determined in the paint. All the effort is there and he's a big....so it can still happen.

NU is a longer team, I'd argue more skilled, quicker but not more powerful with the exception of Pardon (the comparison is with earlier NU teams).

This approach could work, but I'd argue the shots have to drop for it to work consistently.

I'd like to see a little more than freshman years on Kopp and Nance (and a partial one at that for him) before I decide whether they can handle the B1G or not. Four-star is not an average rating, so we'll see if the ratings were correct or not. Law has not been decent on the perimeter for most of the past few weeks. That's part of the problem. I wasn't discussing Falzon, but he's barely played the last couple of seasons, and the injuries have definitely short-circuited his career. And yes, the shots have to drop. That's the name of the game.

Haywood, are we hoping to bring in another player this spring to our 2019 class or are we staying at the three we now have. I would think they might be looking at another guy, maybe a two guard. Thanks appreciate it if you have any thoughts or info.

i don't think so. incoming class already at 4 with young as a red shirt

there is a desire to even out the scholarship distribution and get more open scholarships in the 2021. i think there will be a continued transfer play until they can get high quality young guys

as far as beverly THS shows him as a favorite to MSU

Got to think that if CCC and company were able to get a guy at his level, they would. It is a position that they are a little short at and he would appear to be at a high enough level....But if you miss, just keep with the program.

Haywood, this post about the Public School League player brings up another subject. Are the standards so ridiculously high that Collins and the staff just can’t compete in the Big Ten. I don’t know about you but this sounds like if he have two guys in an almost identical situation, you can only take one. This puts you at a complete disadvantage to the rest of the conference.

Northwestern prides itself in being this magnificent center of liberal education but won’t allow this second kid, from the inner city no less, to get in. I hope they realize they may be destroying an opportunity for poor underprivileged kid to make something of his life. If the so-called eggheads are running the deal we are all wasting our time talking about the team and buying tickets that require a donation. It won’t be long an people like Collins and Phillips will start looking for greener pastures and the eggheads can sit around congratulating each other on their amazing success.
Good point! If NU can't compete for recruits with the likes of Duke, Vandy, Michigan and Boston College because of grades, then it might be time to consider joining the Ivy or MAC. I'm sure these same assistants are thinking the same and Collins as well.

i have heard this has been very eye opening for assistant coaches who have come in from other schools and seen truly how different the standards are

That's for certain and the standards aren't meaningful. Either you keep all students to the same standard or you allow the coaches to compete directly against our peers at Duke, Notre Dame, Vandy, etc. who use the minimum standards.

PLEEASE! Only Northwestern can save my poor underprivileged soul!
