The Mountain Eagle is reporting this morning that Stines's attorneys now admit they have "no evidence of an improper relationship between her (Stines's daughter) and Judge Kevin R. Mullins." I saw a comment on a youtube video, fwiw, from someone claiming to be from Letcher County that Stines hadn't slept in 4 days...Sounds like he had some sort of breakdown.
This the story you're talking about? It has a lot of details I had not seen before.

Friends and coworkers say Stines had been acting erratically since around Labor Day. He was quieter than usual and had stopped regular communications with the community and the press. In mid-August he deleted his office’s Facebook page, and told The Mountain Eagle that people had been criticizing him and he was afraid someone might use the page in a court case. Then, the week of September 9, he couldn’t be reached because his office said he was at a Sheriff’s Association meeting. September 16, he sat for a deposition in a lawsuit filed against him for allegedly not properly training and supervising former deputy Ben Fields. Fields pleaded guilty in January to using his position overseeing persons on home incarceration to coerce women prisoners into sex. No allegations of sexual improprieties by Stines were made in the suit, but the deposition had been delayed numerous times.

The following day, Tuesday, a deputy declined to give any information about a fatal accident, and Stines, who normally returned calls to the newspaper within a few minutes, called reporter Sam Adams at 10 p.m., eight hours after the message was left and three hours past press deadline. He said he had told everyone at the sheriff’s office not to say anything to anyone until he returned to the office. Asked when that would be, he said he wasn’t sure. He was having “some issues.” When pressed, Stines, who is 6’4” and weighed well over 300 pounds, said he had lost 40 pounds in two weeks and didn’t know why.

Friends reported similar experiences, saying Stines had lost a lot of weight in the past two weeks and didn’t seem himself.

The next time the newspaper heard anything about Stines was on Thursday when he was arrested for killing his friend.

Pretty crazy but in line with the whole "kidnap" comment. Sounds like someone that just had a complete break from reality.

That’s odd. The only real reason I would see where he would commit that kind of crime would be someone extremely close to him. Maybe his wife or if he was having an affair a girlfriend, but other than that it wouldn’t make much sense.
That's right Cuckoo people don't make sense. But deplorable jackasses still inventing reasons to drag an innocent, murdered man's name through the mud.

That Mountain Eagle article is similar but the comment I saw was to a Youtube video where a psychologist gave his "thoughts" on the case. The video was by Dr. Todd Grande, whom I'm not familiar with, but he did a good analysis of the case, imo. I may not have paid as much attention to the Youtube video comment but for similarity to that Mountain Eagle article.

What’s worse is now that there’s “no evidence” some die hard will claim it was destroyed or covered up. Those people will never be convinced.

The Lexington Herald Leader quoted the sheriff's attorney as saying the deposition the sheriff gave days earlier would play a "crucial" role in the sheriff's defense.

Wild thread to go back and reread. Internet is undefeated in interneting so we go from the judge being a pedophile who runs a brothel and sometimes the trash needs to be "taken out" so to speak to the sheriff just being a reactionary dipshit with some power and a gun who couldn't handle problems in his personal life any longer and chose violence.

This is one of the many reasons why I limit my social media intake. Can't imagine knowing or being related to the deceased and then reading folks online taking a random, small town rumor and turning it into the first couple pages. A few of you got it right though and didn't fall for rumor and innuendo.

It wasnt even new video. Iirc that video was around since early on just not widely released on the news. The ky court review guy or whatever posted it.

I applaud the effort but nothing new except the spin. Also im wondering when the prosecutor is going to bring a motion over this direct to the press stuff from the defense, because there are some very clear rules about using media in an attempt to influence a jury. I personally know both the prosecutor and defense, so i bet that motion is coming.

First I saw of the first of it, where everyone was just chilling and sitting around. This dude is getting the chair more than likely. I mean, that wasn't a fit of passion where he got angry. That was cold, calculated murder. Sends everyone out, locks the door, has a seemingly calm but pointed convo, and then just pulls a gun on the judge. Yeah, good luck to his lawyer.

His only hope is to plead insanity or mental disorder because, otherwise? He's screwed.

Ever consider quitting outright? I’m sure the pearl clutching/moral high ground/self aggrandizement would be impossible to give up.
First time seeing this but nope. There's always a rush to judgement and everyone seemed ready to "clutch" to any piece of news, whether it be local rumor or a random from twitter. Again, this thread went from the judge being a pedophile and something about a brothel to the actual truth coming out. In backwards land, ie, this board, you call waiting for actual news and not running with anything as "pearl clutching" and "moral high ground." It's really just common sense.

Jmo but the defense is tipping their hand at claiming extreme emotional disturbance. That isnt a complete defense, but a mitigating factor that would impact sentencing.

Problem is, as you stated, there is zero evidence of that on the video. Zero show of anger or any emotion.

These are all things at play in any murder or serious assault case. The difference here is the use of media to get out that message. Its different because its clearly not allowed. Im guessing its a game of chicken so if the prosection shuts it down, the defense can cry foul. Then if they dont move to shut it down, winning in the court of public opinion is the defense best chance.

Problem is the court of public opinion has turned very much against him. This wasn't some "hero dad", it was a paranoid man who was going to be potentially under investigation for the actions of his deputies (they were in some scandal) and he was worried that they were going to take his family. Even his wife and daughter came out and all but dismissed the inappropriate relationship rumors. And if they were true, you'd think he'd be WAAAAAY more angry in that video.

No, this is an example of someone who's mentally broke or is so sociopathic he just waltzed in, created a false pretense to talk with the judge and then blew him away.

He's toast.

I didn't say it was a winning argument, just that it was coming. I agreed in my post, there is no evidence to support it.

Obviously paranoid. Unreal how many cops are psychopaths.

My question has always been: Does the profession attract psychopaths or does the profession create psychopaths?

I lean towards the former because there’s a certain type that line of work seems to attract - aggressive, power drunk, not necessarily the brightest bulbs. But a case could be made for dealing with humans at their worst day in and day out creates cold, angry ********.

I'm probably biased, because a kid I grew up with that was on the edge of sanity, immediately became a cop out of high school.

After about a year, he ran off with a underage girl. Loco.

Correct, both.

In this case it looks like he was slowly becoming more and more psychotic and withdrawn. Then the pressure from the civil suit, which he wasnt named iirc, ended up pushing him over the edge. Reading the tea leaves, he must've blamed Mullins for the investigation or outcome.

Not criticizing the defense handling of the case, but given so much proof about his increasing psych issues, im surprised it took as long as it did to ask for a competency eval. I assumed that would've been first thing out of the gate even as a cya so you know your client can competently assist in the defense.
