It was 1973. Penn State finished 12-0, but 5th in both polls. Betty from Port Matilda heard Joe say "Screw the polls. We won the Lambert!"
Of course, Betty was 97 then......

We obviously just need to tighten some things up, obviously have some players cut loose, obviously be consistent and obviously start and end with I love you. 1-0 with Northwestern this week…obviously”.

I still can't believe undefeated Dartmouth (Dartmouth!) won the Lambert Trophy in 1970 over 7-3 PSU!

Ah, but Dartmouth also finished 14th in the final AP Poll. Penn State was 18th.

Very odd indeed. This was pre- 1A and 1AA days. A holdover from the past when no real distinction was made between these types of programs wrt these awards and honors.
PSU went 7-3, finishing strong after a 2-3 start. John Hufnagle became the starting QB in game 6 at Army, and that spurred a turnaround for the offense.
Joe turned down a 'minor' bowl game at the end of the season. The Bluebonnet in Houston, maybe?
When Dartmouth was awarded the Lambert Trophy, Joe issued a challenge to them and the media, saying he wanted to play Dartmouth in Yankee Stadium to see who would be awarded the Trophy. There were no takers.
