Essentially, he is a basketball Beamer type hire. Local connections, a nice trajectory (Charleston Southern, East Tenn, Wake) for eleven years in coaching. He played here, his kid played here, he's an Irmo guy. He's in his forties with years of playing and coaching experience, which makes him seasoned enough. He recognizes all the challenges here at USC. He knows the landscape. He could convince GG to stay home like he did.

There will be instant support for him.....we might actually fill the lower bowl of the CLA.

And here is the key.....Tanner had success with this approach with Beamer. You tend to go back to what works.

An he might actually find us a real point guard.

No…

get someone with experience. Beamer had 1 good year. And it was a 7-6 year at that. Just is still out on whether or not that hire works out in the long run.

Just no…

Nah. I would hate to see his legacy here tarnished if he were to come back and not succeed as head coach. The last thing I want to see is our fans calling for BJ to be fired in a few seasons.

No offense to BJ - I think he'll be a great coach one day. But USC, and where the program is at the moment, is not a place to be learning how to be a head coach on the job. Someone should have at least a good grasp on that side of things so they can try and deal with all the other stuff that keeps USC down.

Now, bring him in as the top assistant! Pay him loads - let him bring in the big fish to play. That would be great.

Everybody makes good arguments and asks good questions. It's definitely a risky move. I've felt disconnected from basketball since Fogler left. I believe many others have also. So, I think the risk is worth it to try to get folks re-energized about this program.

We’re talking like the program is the worst team in the conference like it was once Frank took over. The basketball team just finished 5th in probably the top 2 toughest conference. It doesn’t matter who we get to be the coach here if the things at the top don’t change.

I heard somewhere on the radio or tv a sportscaster said, great players do not always make good coaches. A lot of the times, it's the bench warmer or someone who has never been a player that makes the best coaches.

I'm pulling for the Furman Coach to be our next coach...

He's a South Carolina native...he's ranked 10th among active coaches in America...and his team was 4 seconds away from the NCAA tournament...Chattanooga hit a shot with a few seconds to go...

I like this plan, what do you think of Landon Powell as the baseball coach??

Meh. What is everyone's obsession with all our staff members in all our sports have to be former players here?

That doesn't even make any sense. What does their abilities as coaches have to do with a former player here's ability to coach?

BJ McKie is working with Forbes and both are having success at ETSU and Wake. Being from Columbia and from USC I would feel like he has some skin in the game. Just because a coach has not had big time success yet, does not mean he would fall flat on his face. Same goes for a coach with an all-star resume, just because he had success else where does not automatically set him up for success at his next destination. I turn this question around on you, What do you see in a former player from here ability not to coach? If you know what kind of outcome is going to happen with the next coach in football, basketball and baseball at USC please get in touch with me, I would love to know your picks for the stock market. We all laughed at Dabo Swinney being selected HC at Clemson, look who is laughing now. I also feel the same way about Landon Powell, I think he would make a great baseball coach at USC

More importantly, what does Landon think? I think that Landon is happy and content in Greenville.

Not sure to be honest, but surely he has thought about coaching his Alma mater. Big time SEC baseball, a school that has proven it can be successful at the highest levels of baseball. Landon Powell who has made the big show and successful at smaller schools. What's not to like about this combination. Do you think he could be content to coach at USC? I am not sure he would come a running if the powers that be offered him an opportunity at USC but I am pretty sure he would a least consider it. Same thing goes for Mike Boynton. Hell even through Dawn Staley in the mix for Men's basketball coach at least she understands elite recruiting. That is my rambling for today I just want USC to be competitive with everyone in all sports. GO COCKS

You didn't answer the question. You brought up Muschamp and Martin and stated that because they were average BJ would be a success. Unless I misinterpreted your post.

Why are we bringing up baseball in a basketball thread? We made the post season last year, just took 2-3 from the #1 team in the country with a depleted pitching staff.. Can we please give MK the season before we call for his head?

Back on topic, I think McKie makes complete sense and is a good candidate. He's had plenty of time to learn the ropes as an assistant, FM left this program in pretty good shape with national recognition, we finished ahead of where I had in mind. Its disapointing we havent capatalized on the F4 run for sure. Expecations need to be higher but we dont have the long list of success here, we need someone who can grind it out. We need someone young and hungry to hit the recruting trail and keep the instate talent home, just my .02. I was not on the fire FM train either for what its worth.

Maybe Landon prefers coaching to recruiting. Less pressure to perform well on the diamond. Maybe he's got a good home life up there.

Why don't we just hire Forbes if he will bring BJ with him. Forbes is in his mid 50s so he may not want to coach until he is 60. That gives us a succession plan.

I am 100% here for him or Boynton. I think both could be Beamer type of culture changers and really connect with and inspire the players, and excite the fanbase, and their upsides are limitless. Boynton would be my first choice if it wasn't for the buyout, but I'd still pull the trigger to get him. I can't see that happening, though, so I'd say BJM would be a slam dunk hire. I think we would definitely get back in the mix (if we ever truly were) with GG and others.

My guess is that the buyout eliminates Boynton, assuming that the BOT would not allow RT to let FM go after the 2020-2021 season.

Just because he played here doesn’t make him the best fit for the program. Needs to go to a mid major and gain some experience. If he had not played here most would say, “who the heck is BJ?”

I like the idea of hiring BJ........ as a top assistant. I'd rather he be here as an assistant than at Wake Forest and I think he could help out more here in regards to recruiting. I've never heard anything about him to suggest he'd be a good HC hire other than he used to play here. If playing here were the only requirement then we'd have hundreds of candidates for the job.
