With Rushel Shell and Wendell Smallwood the only RBs on the roster with any experience at all - the rest of the RB corps is a combined 23 carries / 73 yards (3.04yd/carry); is this a do or die year for Rushel Shell?

Smallwood has been a top performer at the position, and the general opinion seems to be that Shell has room to grow. Is this going to be his year to be the featured back and make his Mountaineer bones?

The freshman you got from North Davidson(NC) is going to be a good one for you guys. I have coached against him the past 3 years and he will get reps for you guys this fall

Crawford, Shell, McKoy and Crest. RB will not be a problem. Crawford will challenge Shell for the starting RB. McKoy will get reps because he is just to talented to redshirt and has a great understanding of the offense. Crest will get touches because Dana has finally figured out that Crest will not be a QB at WVU but he is so athletic and such a playmaker he needs to get the ball in his hands every game. I expect more balanced play calling this season with the improvement of Howard and the receivers but WVU will still rely heavily on the run game in certain situations. If you asked me who is the one RB to keep an eye on it's Crawford. There is a reason SEC programs wanted this kid.

Agree with Vault. Shell & Crawford will split carries with McKoy getting some too. Crawford needs to produce right away.

Crest, I feel for him in a way with QBing not panning out. Kind of a novelty in throwing him around at different positions. Hope they can find a way to make him a contributor. He is a terrific athlete & seems to have a good team attitude.

The Running game will be just fine this season. We have an experienced offensive Line coming back. A good O Line can make a good RB look like an all pro and average RB look good and a poor RB look average

Your poster reads as if Smallwood were still on the team

Shell will be the starter. It will be interesting to see who gets the most #2 snaps as the season unfolds; McCoy or Crawford?

Both are Fr., right? Can we make room behind Shell for both?

If we can develop that kind of running game to spread the ball 3 ways, good for us. What about Howard and the passing game? Can we leave it behind?

McKoy and Pettaway are the two freshman, with McKoy coming in early for spring ball. (As stated earlier in this thread, Seider has already said that McKoy will not redshirt this season and he expects him to contribute.) My guess is that Pettaway will redshirt unless injuries to one of the other backs.

Crawford will be a Jr this season. It wouldn't surprise me to see Crawford becoming the no.1 back by mid season. Shell had better lay it all out this year or he will see Crawford do like Smallwood did last year and take over the backfield.

Thanks for the info on Crawford, I didn't have access to the roster or stats earlier and couldn't remember him for some reason... that is until I did look at the stats. He is a Jr and has zero career stats. Has he played at all? Even ST?

I don't mean to question your statement, not trying to get into an argument, but maybe you've seen him play somewhere along the line to say he'll be the #1 back if Shell slides?

No problem - Crawford has just joined the team over the summer. He was JC last year and very impressive as in "junior college player of the year". Of course, he is stepping up to the top college division and will have to adjust but here is some info for you:

-2015 Spalding NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year

-led Northwest to its first junior college national championship since 1992

-two-year career totals at Northwest CC show 3,161 yards rushing, an average of 6.7 yards per rush and 30 touchdowns

Here is his bio: http://www.wvusports.com/profile.cfm?id=103446&sport=football

I have been going off of what Seider has been saying about him. He definitely won't be coming to WVU with only 2 yrs of elegibility left to be comfortable being a backup.
