I'm sure this has been discussed before and it's now making the news..but this is getting out of control in lexington. I live in hamburg and there's a pos asking for money at every intersection all the way up to the interstate exit. You can't even come out of any of the stores in the shopping center without one approaching.

I know most of these people are scamming but the market for them has to be getting over saturated.

It's absurd. Multiple people at every intersection down Richmond Rd when it's nice out.

Had a woman get out of a late model explorer and ask for $2 for some gas. She had a Vera Bradley bag but had the 'drug face'. People have no shame...

There's one that camps on the ramp from New Circle to Nicholasville Road with a sign that says "Spread a little cheese on a broke cracker." I laugh my *** off every time I see it.

It's really bad on Nicholasville road too. We get them coming into work begging for money. Throw the same people out every day, they come back the next.

Unfortunately the problem is the fact that panhandling is lucrative in Lexington.

The city has started a program where they'll literally pick people up off the street and let them pick up trash around the city for $9 an hour 6 hours a day but a lot of them won't do it because they can make easier money begging.

I wonder what % of those are not actually homeless and just scamming?

Seems like there's more beggers than actual homeless. Takes a true POS to pretend to be homeless(the news did a segment a few years ago on a guy who pretended to be retarded to get more money....Went from town to town doing it)

I'd like it to be like in Athens, GA. There are meters on the streets that allow you to donate to homeless relief charities, with signs saying not to donate to panhandlers.

A decent percentage are probably homeless. I think the people who live in nice houses and come into town to panhandle are somewhat rare.

That said, 99% of panhandlers don't actually need your money for anything other than drugs, booze, cigs, etc. Almost all panhandlers are homeless by choice or don't want to change their situation. The truly needy are the ones with mental health issues who rarely panhandle because they don't even know where they are.

There are places for homeless people to go to get shelter, food, job training etc. The ones that panhandle want easy cash.

I work downtown and RARELY see everything they own in a shopping cart homeless people. Just a bunch of bums and drug addicts sleeping in front of the court houses and library.

About 9 years ago I was broke as could be and needed to find a job. Couldn't even afford Internet access so I went down to the library to look for a job. Half the people on the computers were homeless people playing games or watching youtube.

I made the turn at the UK Club this morning and there was a guy asking for golf balls at the 10th tee. This **** has jumped the shark.

Moved back to Lexington and saw downtown by the library is just one big homeless hangout. WTF happened? How long has that been going on?

Will say, a little over a week ago I was leaving Carsons after dinner. Guy came up to me and asked where he could work for a bit to get gas money to get to Winchester. I said "sorry I don't have any cash on me" and he said "Not looking for a handout, I just want to work a few hours so someone will pay me to get home"

If I had any cash on me, I'd have paid him to wash my car or something.

Iowa City had those too. Pretty funny to see the look on the panhandler's face as you side step him to plug a few coins in the meter.

$9 a hour lmao. They say this will be supported by online donations. Yea right.

Id day you can make a lot more than $9 an hour at Hamburg.

The ones I see are dressed not too shabby.

It's def heroin. I bet there are teams of folks who beg and scam enough to rent a hotel room for a while and get their fix.

Honestly, I'm pretty embarassed by the city of Lexington. I grew up there, but haven't lived there since 2003. Still feel very connected, between family living there, coming to visit, being a UK fan, yada, yada. First and foremost, I agree with anyone who says that giving these people money is NOT the answer. You're really enabling their already awful situation.

But some of you really need to get out and see the world a bit if you really think people asking for money around town is such a devastating catastrophe. Ramping up Police involvement?? Come on. Do better, Lexington.

When beggars ask me for money, I always explain to them how I owe on my house, I owe on my car, I owe on my student loans, etc. etc. etc....and then I hit 'em with this dose of reality: He has it better than me. At least he's at zero, I'm in the d@mn hole!

And then I ask him if he can spare a couple of bucks.

I've never found a one that is as generous and moved to kindness as they expect you to be.

They're awful in Indianapolis, but the local code prohibits them from verbally begging. They can just "shake the cup" so to speak.

Feels really good saying "YOU CAN'T TALK TO ME!!" to a dumb drunk hobolo. I'm moving to the Philly area soon and look forward to mocking the homeless along the east coast.

Police got involved because there have been instances of harassment from the pan handler to the driver. That can create a dangerous situation.

Lexington has ample shelters at night for actual homeless, as well as food. The city is doing pretty good except for perhaps trying to help people get off the streets.

If you want to see the real homeless, then head down Winchester Rd at 7:00 a.m.....not pretty.

I'll always give without hesitation, no matter the situation; personal philosophy for me... not giving is worse than giving however bad it may end up being; my unpopular opinion of the day.

Those Transy students just walking out in front of cars is a dangerous situation also.

Really Lexington is nothing compared to like DC.

Makes 2 of us. I give almost every time as well. If I am enabling them to get drugs or booze, well you fooled me good, but if that money is helping you or your family eat, then I can live with that.

I am fed up with people trying to bum money off of me.

It's usually just family members, but the panhandlers get on my nerves also.

This happened in StL...I was approached by a guy that asked for a couple bucks so he could buy some chewing tobacco....that's all he wanted. So I told him, OK, lets go into the store and you can pick what you want and I'll buy it...and he did, so I paid and he thanked me, said God Bless and went on his way. I was truly surprised by it.

I've done this a few times. Doesn't work everytime due to some bums not looking like bums. But if i know they are about to approach me for money. I ask them for money first. Talk about confusion.

Has anyone ever been hit up by the short haired lesbian chick? I'll say this, she treats begging like a JOB! Hits up EVERY CAR, whether it be at a gas station, Hamburg parking lot, or a Sonic Drive In.

I really haven't given money except for one occasion where it was a young couple with an infant in a POS truck, but I always ask them if I can buy them something to eat. I've bought groceries for a couple of people, meals for a few others and once bought gas for a young lady with an infant. She wasn't panhandling, but was in front of me in line at a convenience store. She told the clerk she wanted to get $2 worth of gas, and gas at that time was well over $2 a gallon. I paid for my stuff and went to the pump and filled her car up and gave her $10. It was an old beat up Grand AM and she was about my daughter's age, and it just broke my heart seeing her not even able to afford a touching gallon of gas.

Yes...shes not smart enough to track her scam tho. She's asked me atleast 3 times, she gives the same story every time "I love in Frankfort, family member is in hospital at UK, we don't have funds to get back"

I'm not from Lexington, but have been approached downtown and at Hamburg by the same short dude who starts off by saying "are you from here, I hope your country?" Proceeds to tell me he's from Hazard and his uncle is in the U.K. Hospital blah blah blah.

Like a guy approached you on the green or tee box? What course are you playing at?
