this commentary published in today's Knoxville News Sentinel (a Republican leaning paper btw) was written by the editor of the Charleston Gazette. And it's spot on. I'm sure it will ruffle some feathers here in TN....and this board. But it's good....http://www.knoxnews.com/opinion/columnists/james-a-haught-the-tide-of-history-flows-left_80362872

Well from the very start of the article they get a large part of history wrong. Liberals didn't fight to end slavery. Religious Conservatives fought to end slavery.

So when they **** up something that simple... I'll skip the rest of the ********.

If one defines the status quo as conservative and any change from that as liberal--which, in fact, is the underlying premise--then the article is accurate in its assertion. However, that's an inaccurate description of conservatism and liberalism.

It actually isn't if you look at the definition of liberal:

lib·er·al
adjective
  1. 1.
open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values.
"they have more liberal views toward marriage and divorce than some people"
  2. 2.
(of education) concerned mainly with broadening a person's general knowledge and experience, rather than with technical or professional training.
    synonyms: wide-ranging, broad-based, general
    "a liberal education"
By definition, then, our founding fathers were liberals.

That's by definition, but the actual meaning of words sometimes deviate from the definition in certain contexts.
