I was prompted in another thread to read Barry Fenchak's facebook. Found this summary of Barron.

Under Eric Barron
1 - Penn State has the highest tuition and fees for in-state students of any University in the nation.
2 - Penn State's academic ranking in the Big Ten has dropped from 4th to 10th.
3 - Penn State was just evaluated as the 14th Best Value in the Big Ten (that is 14th out of 14), as measured by the US News and World Report annual evaluation - and as 12th out of 14 by the Wall Street Journal.
4 - Penn State's long-term debt has exploded from $900 Million when Barron arrived, to nearly $3.5 Billion today.

Pay close attention to item 4.

Penn State trustees approved a series of merit pay raises for the university’s senior leaders Friday, including outgoing President Eric Barron, who has announced his retirement at the close of the current academic year.

Barron, 69, was awarded an increase of 2.5 percent for 2021-22, which resets his base salary to $876,612. Barron’s total compensation - including a scheduled $200,000 retention bonus and other perks - will be above $1.1 million. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, Barron was the 7th-highest paid public college leader in America in 2020.
