Not sure how anyone could have thought we were going to be Hal Mumme type Air Raid,
Because we hired a former Hal Mumme wide receiver to be our offensive coordinator 3 years ago [laughing]

I mean, just a stab in the dark on why people might have thought that conclusion

People like to complain about running out of the shotgun (or not under center), but I don't think those people really understand how dangerous this type of offense can really be. Tennessee runs the ball and almost never goes under center. Despite that fact, their two running backs combined for almost 2000 yards and their quarterback amassed another 670. It can be an extremely effective way to run the football.

This type of run offense is extremely dangerous because the defensive end must make a decision. They must play contain to the outside or they must crash down to the inside. If they crash down then the quarterback pulls the ball out of the belly and runs to the outside. If they contain the ball does inside to the running back. This gives you two running options and is especially dangerous if the quarterback is mobile. This very offense is what burned us (and Texas A&M) with Jackson under center for Louisville. Kentucky ran this offense last year, but the problem they had was that Towles rarely kept the ball. That's can't be the case going forward. We need to have the threat of the quarterback picking up some yards if he pulls the ball out. This running game will also be helped by the fact that we should be playing a fairly short passing game, which is often just considered an extended run game. It should be pretty exciting to see Johnson and Baker get the chance in the open field, and making linebackers sprint out wide should open up the middle for Boom to have some big plays.

I like that Stoops sees he needs some experience to assist him at head coach. It is disappointing that it took him 3 years to figure that out. I hope all these titles he is handing out doesn't cause any power struggles though. We now have 2 offensive coordinators and 2 defensive coordinators. Hopefully all these changes improve our play and add a few more wins to the total next year. I still am not sold on Stoops, but I will give him 1 more year to prove himself before I completely write him off.

So we now have co-offensive coordinators and co-defensive coordinators?

So who is responsible for special teams

Thought it was funny when Gran mentioned UC's poor performance in the Bowl game. Said he was worried Stoops still wanted to hire him.

You can just tell when someone knows what they are doing. Both these guys carry themselves that way and I think the players will notice it quickly and hopefully start carrying themselves in a more business like manner and start to mature into the players they were recruited to be.

Whether all of this results in more wins, who knows. Many programs are changing coaches and think they are getting better as well. The SEC is just a bear, but I am hoping that Stoops found the right recipe over what other programs are doing right now.

Buh, Stoops, and Gran will all three be the big guys on ST if I had to guess. All three have experience there and the rest of the staff will take a much smaller role in ST.

That's if I had to guess.

Very well spoken folks, they have a system, they believe in their system. What I hear is that players will buy into the system or they get left behind. We game plan based on what we see and we have options in place if the other team does something different.

Gran seems cool under fire, won't get too excited to continue to think and plan based on what he sees

It is semantics, but I don't get why Gran says he isnt air raid. every UC game I viewed his O was spread 4 wide with the QB in the shotgun, lots of short passes. And I don't get the people on twitter saying "horray!" about us allegedly being pro style vs air raid. Does anyone expect us to be lined up with the QB under center with a fullback & halfback lined up split or in an I, with a TE, and only 2 wide receivers?
Have you watched the Carolina Panthers offense this year? Go Cats!!

Does explain alot about why Gran wasn't pursued last year. Still think Brown kinda screwed us by leaving after 2 years...he should have stayed 3 years and then left but whatever.

We now have experience on the offensive side and we've got coaches who are turning down offers elsewhere to stay here, that tells me alot about the type of coach Stoops is. And why I don't believe for a second all the talk about him micromanaging everything.

I fully expect this offense to take off next year. Should be one of the more explosive offenses in the SEC. Lots of talent, lots of experience. Now just need to shore up that oline and we're good to go.
How did brown screw us over by accepting a head coaching position? If anyone is to blame it's Dawson, or even stoops for hiring Dawson!!!!!

Oh I know, and Tom Brady is in the shotgun 95% of the time, & so is Rodgers & Manning. Like I said, it is just semantics, what is actual pro style of today is pretty damn close to air raid.

Who cares, it is just labels and words. Move the damn ball, get some 1st downs, and score 30+ points, call it whatever you want. And I think these 2 gentlemen hired officially to UK today will help us improve greatly to do this.

Agreed, generally, but you have to be careful with something like this. How well I remember the kudos re the way Dawson handled himself in interviews ("there's just something about this guy!")....

Thing i like the most was (multiple pro style) You recruit the best possible, then adapt your system to your talent... Cal does this in basketball.. You can't force a square peg into a round hole... That in my opinion happens way to much!

Also creating mismatches with changing personal is something dawson struggled with imo.
(Adjustments) once the opposing defense adjusted, is another area we were lacking in this past year..

The UC offense was more Air Raid than anything we've seen since Stoops came here. The Y Cross is as basic an Air Raid pattern/play as you'll see and I can't recall UK running that in the last three years. OTOH, you can see it multiple times on game tape watching UC. They also use Mesh which again wasn't used by Brown or Dawson.

A big change you will see is the original Air Raid never had the QB read option as a part of the offense whereas Gran has the QB read option as a basis for many of his plays and uses it profusely as a play action ploy. And even as a part of the actual option thought process in running or throwing from the same play. Don't expect the QB to consistently run double digit times in a game but that threat will be used to the extent the defense allows it.

There was no TE persay used by UC this year but was a big part of their first year there due to personnel. I expect CJ to be moved all over the formation to elicit matchup problems for the opposing defense. I would advise any that are inclined to watch some UC games/highlights on youtube.
