Looks bleak

Unless there is an improbable turn around for basketball this season, we are headed for disappointment. Next year we have lame duck Brown with less talent than before when he delivered 4 consecutive lackluster football seasons. This basketball roster doesn't have much in the way of raw, young talent to even hope that maybe experience this season could pay off next season. We have a basketball coach that is almost 70 years old and so far has not proven effective at utilizing the new mercenary system the portal has created. Not much to hope for the near future it appears.

If his name wasn’t Bob Huggins, would they still have a job?

I believe he has earned the goodwill to endure 2 consecutive bad seasons. But his age and lack of any kind of foundation to build the winning teams he has had in the past does raise concern that he will ever be able to produce a tournament team at WVU again. At least a tournament team with any chance to actually make a run. Hopefully he can see that as well and acknowledge he could spend another 2 years trying to win now by cobbling together older transfers and gambles.

The portal is a hit or miss situation for teams like West Virginia. If you can get lucky and pick up a couple stars within the portal, and you already have a few role players, then you'll find some success. If you swing and miss, you're in for a miserable season of unrest and up & down play. Playing together as a team is the key, and sometimes bringing in one or two bad apples can ruin the pot of stew.

Huggins found a brand that was working for WVU in Press Virginia. Getting away from that killed possibilities of success every year in Big 12. We foul often anyway so why get away?

Because if you don’t have an Adrian or Holton at the top of the press and a Konate at the backend the press wouldn’t necessarily be effective. I must admit, it appeared we had the skills this year to use the press. Mitchell should be able to play at the top and Wague/Okonkwo should be able to play the back end. We surely have enough others to make life miserable for other teams. And what is the worst that could happen, lose? We're doing that anyway.

Yeah I dont think Huggins has anything to lose now but more games, which is expected anyway. The press would at least be fun to watch. The fast pace and style catches teams off guard. I think we could run it, and he could certainly recruit for it. Whatever else he is doing isnt working. Id like to see Huggins finish his career on a higher note than where we are.

He would, too, which is why Wren will end up showing him the door.

This is the biggest collective hole the two primary revenue sports have been in since the end of the Nehlen/Catlett era, hopefully both experience a similar turnaround.

The Nehlen era wasn't a hole. It was just a culture and scheme shift that didn't fit at all with what was left on the roster. The WVU brand and recruiting infrastructure were not burned when Nehlen left. Because it was in decent shape is a big reason it only took one year for RR to shift the entire offensive and defensive scheme to something completely different from what Nehlen had WVU doing for 2 decades.
