UK is 14-2 over the last 16 match ups. UL could win, and they will win again and when it happens UL fans will claim they are back and have the top program. Reality is, the gap between UK and UL is now larger than the gap between UL and WKU.
To me the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s were a golden era of college basketball. One of the contributing factors to that was for the most part UK, IU and UofL were all really strong programs during that time frame. I don’t consider NCAA championships by Virginia, UConn or Villanova to be a golden era. To me, it represents the exact opposite.
A really, really good UK basketball season involves maybe 3 or 4 losses along the way. I choose not to live in the fairytale world of UK going undefeated all the way to a national championship title. Some do, I don’t. And if I had any say in to whom those losses would be (which I don’t) it would be great if every other year or so one of those very few losses be to IU or UofL. Why?! How can you utter such treasonous words?! Because it stokes the fire of a good, healthy rivalry, the kind where you sit in your neighbor’s garage in August sipping on a beer, talking junk about how UK is going to extract their revenge in December. That’s why.
