It will be interesting to see what kind of contract they come up with and whether the person they offer will accept it.

That's the thing. Everybody knows HC contracts are beyond preposterous. Someone can start the ball rolling toward sanity with a different structure for contracts going forward, but all it takes is the first highly-in-demand coach to say, "Hey, if you want me to come there, I demand XXX for my contract", and its blown up. I don't know if there's any way to get that toothpaste back into the tube, ever.

Based on 12 game regular season pay them per win. So Beamer's total is 8 million is 0.67 million per game. He gets nothing for a loss.

If he makes the playoffs then it's another 0.67 per game

I thought about that, but I wouldn't want to pay a coach for wins if the overall season was 5-7.

I believe this is what it will take. It would take a program of LSU's stature to say "we're going to pay you well, give you all the necessary resources, but there's no absurd buyout." Buyout or not, LSU is a top job and they'll have no problems landing a top coach. They can set the precedent. Right now everyone does b/c they have to b/c everyone else does. Once one program pops the bubble, it becomes easier for others to follow suit.

And, frankly, I don't know how much coaches care about the buyouts. Of course, they're not going to turn them down, but I really don't think most coaches would refuse to sign a with a program without these ridiculous buyouts. Sexton pushes for them and once one program did it, it became a "well, if we don't do it, he'll go somewhere where they will offer him a crazy buyout."

Hopefully LSU doing it will galvanize other schools to do the same.

This for sure. They're making millions each year already. They buyout is the cherry on top... and it's absolutely ludicrous. If you're doing such a poor job in your profession, why should you be insulated from being fired. Especially when you're making $5-10 million each year. It makes absolutely no sense.

And let's not forget that these guys are all state employees who also earn a pension paid by state taxpayers.
