Lowly LWE vs Upstart Libertyville

It seems like LWE was an afterthought this season. Sure, they made some noise - and there were hopes - prior to the HF game late this season. However, after HF limited LWE to a field goal, the noise dissipated.

Meanwhile....

No one really cared about Libertyville early on as we dismissed newt as a homer when he sung their praises. Then, in a nationally broadcasted game - ok all games on cube are - Libertyville smashes Lake Forest as a prelude to a match-up with Stevenson. Our collective eyebrows raised, and in our state of wonder...woosh...Libertyville put on a show against Stevie...suddenly, Libertyville was sitting adjacent to GW.

So now we come to this...lowly LWE vs upstart Libertyville in a great second round match-up. I can't say I know much about Coach Mike Jones...no bones not THE mike Jones...but I do know Coach Z...and much like I think Coach Lenti is MC's biggest asset this week, I think the same about LWE.

Most fascinating to me, however, about this match-up was one poster's earlier comment that L'ville QB Lees is similar in almost all ways to former Edgy Board favorite Tommy Fussell (sp?). I agree. If in fact Less is Fussell reborn, then indeed, Libertyville is going to have a game - for the first time this season - which will be closer than 20 points.

Fuessel, but close enough.
Lees statistics sure are impressive, I think LWE is going to have their hands full.

In the other thread there was a comparison between Fuessel's and Lees' (combine ignazio's post and this one and you get Fuesselees...) stats. In many ways, they were different kind of playmakers at the same position. Fuessel made a name for himself via toughness in the playoffs. he was not in a system to be able to put up Lees-esque numbers. That said, Lees vs Bro for PoY.

The hit between Fuessel and Carlson from GW in the 2012 championship game was the most violent I think I have ever seen in HS football.
When Fuessel got loose around the corner there was no way that I thought he wasn't going to score. Maybe the fastest guy in the state had about 40 yards to get up to full speed and Carlson came equally as hard from the other direction, neither one blinked an eye before the collision.
I'm still amazed that either one of them got up.

JC I have to hand it to you for stirring pots.

20 years of this...

I love these round two match-ups...LWE/Liberty, Cary/benet, GW/MC....and some good undercards too.

I think there are two teams that can beat libertyville...LWE and GW...that's not a prediction, but I think we find out this week - finally - how good l'ville really is: overrated (based on SoS) or very good. I don't think there is anything in between.

Yep. Enough chatter on this board. Time to play the game and find out. Same for MC v. GW.

That hit cost Carlson his entire junior year baseball season. He may actually have been a better baseball player but the injury from that hit cost him looks in baseball. He had a cannon from short and could have played there or outfield in college.

Ask him if he has regrets and he just smiles. Best defensive play I have ever seen in any game period.

And that hit left Fuessel unable to continue in that game. Two guys that were not going to give up.

What a game. LWE is a tough, tough team. Libertyville defense stepped up huge when tested. At this point don't know how you can argue against Lees for POY.

After watching both Brodner and Lees today, would go with co-POY. Both are very impressive.

Hard to separate the two. The numbers from both are staggering.

Sorry, guys, but I just don't see it from Lees. Don't get me wrong. He's a really good football player. But he's not the POY. He's not even the best QB in the area. He routinely threw off his back foot today. He made bad reads and threw into double coverage (and threw a couple of horrible interceptions). He's able to throw for so many yards because teams are so worried about trying to contain his running game that his receivers are wide open. But that doesn't make him the Player of the Year. That makes him a really good player who plays for a coach who has a great game plan.

Brodner is a beast. He does it all, with and without the ball. He's a decoy for the offense. He'll block. He can catch passes. And, of course, he's a devastating runner. He clearly is the best player. If they put him on defense, he'd lead the team in tackles, sacks and interceptions, too. Seriously, that kid is a monster (and apparently he showed it today from what I heard).

It will be a great match-up in DeKalb to see L'Ville and GW.

You don't see it? May I share a stat or two with you? He had 4 scores today that puts him over 50 on the season. That's right over 50. He is nearing 4,000 combined yards on the season. This isn't career stats mind you this is this season. And with the exception of this week and Week 1 vs. Elk Grove and week 5 vs. Warren he didn't play into the fourth quarter. He threw two bad picks today. But does that mean that we ignore if Brodner turns it over?

At some point give credit to the LWE defense which is very good.

If your going to base this off how he played today, he was 14 of 21 for 268 and 3 TD's with 2 picks. He also ran for 127 and a score.

That came against one of the best defenses in the state. Not sure what else this kid has to do.

Just don't see it? 400 yards of offense against a team that was supposed to "contain him." Almost 100 career touchdowns. Going to the Big 10. Just so you know people also play football north of Joliet.

Btw, he's going to be a receiver. I don't really expect him to have Aaron Rodgers mechanics. And you take away credit for his passing stats because he is also a threat running? Makes sense. Give credit where credit is due.

Really??? Have you ever seen him play in person???
Sorry, but he is one of the best high school athletes I've ever seen and I'm a realist! He's a game changer!!! Watch him live and tell me what he doesn't have! He is the real deal!
I think you have a bitter taste in you mouth!
