NU big man commit Luke Hunger was named the NEPSAC player of the year. That’s a pretty big honor. And, I have to admit the fact that Brumbaugh was named second team feels kinda good too.

NU may forever owe gratitude to Brumbaugh for recruiting Hunger to NU........

Hunger had quite the season, with his team making it to the finals of both the NEPSAC AAA championship and the so-called National Prep Championship. In the latter game, he led his team with 20 points and 7 rebounds in a losing effort. I don't know what happened in the NEPSAC final because it seemed he hardly played, might have been foul trouble or injury. Brumbaugh didn't exactly light it up either. I think we're getting the better player of the two original commits.

Here is the report on Hunger:

National Prep Championship Report Part One

Luke Hunger 6’10 Center 2022 (Northfield Mount Hermon School): Hunger can space the floor from beyond the arc. He makes three-pointers at a good rate when spotting up or on pick and pops. Finishes proficiently around the basket with his sturdy frame and soft touch off the glass. Also is a solid passer, finding teammates for layups on backdoor cuts. Defensively, Hunger is terrific on the glass. He uses his strength to get an advantageous position on opponents when boxing out to rebound at an excellent rate. Also does a nice job staying out of foul trouble, showing good verticality when contesting opponents’ shots around the rim. Hunger is committed to Northwestern.

Maybe Ryan Young saw what was coming with LH on the squad--more pine time--and decided to bail. RY plays to the best of his abilities, leaves it all on the court--and that will get him more playing time at a MAC school

I'd be surprised if he goes to the MAC.
Supposedly he's a good student.
I would expect him to trade somewhat laterally or up academically and actually get his Masters degree with academic credentials in mind.
You don't want to go Northwestern undergrad then a Ball State grad program.
I see him hoping for Vandy or Stanford or Notre Dame or Duke or UNC or Wake Forest or (God forbid) Wisconsin or Michigan or a university with a good academic reputation in a lesser conference.

Who knows, maybe that won't happen and he'll have to trudge back to NU and return to Collins' Island of Misfit Toys, where he can spend more time with the "Matt in the Box."

I agree with everything except the Ball State comment. It is the Harvard of Muncie

That hasn't really been the case. Look at the recent grad transfers: Benson went to SIU, Falzon to Quinnipiac, Ash to Wright State, Gaines to Siena, Kopp to Indiana. None are "academic schools." I think issues like playing time, coaching staff and system fit are often more important.

Testicle Tech, pride of semi-rural Indiana.
I had a guy working for me who went to Ball State on a track and field scholarship. He was a funny guy, vert self deprecating. Once told me "Don't forget it's the #1 handicapped accessible campus in the country".

I have two girls. The youngest, 9, excels. Sometimes says she wants to go to Northwestern like dad. I always answer "what's wrong with Purdue"?

The oldest, 15, does not excel. Though, to my enormous amazement, something has switched this year and she is getting really good grades. Mom and I have always sold her on the idea that Ball State is a fine school.

I had heard St. Joes in the mix for Young.

I have a handicapped son who attended BSU on a Presidential Scholarship and won an award as the best graduating handicapped student. It is in fact the best in the nation in that category. Fabulous program.

Thats a good point. Those are all steps down academically - especially Indiana (joking).
I know Benson graduated in 3 years, which is impressive.

"I really haven't had a true college career yet in playing at the level I know I can and know I will next year," Benson said. "I want to go out there and show how good and versatile a player I really am. One thing I take pride in is playing really hard and bringing energy and passion to the floor."

Thats definitely a guy who wanted to be a starter at the Division 1 level.

I don't know about Ash academically, but Wright State seems like a playing time decision as well.
Gaines graduated as a redshirt junior and wanted to be closer to home? (I think)
Falzon graduated on time as a redshirt junior and participated on Senior Day. Can't imagine he was in great demand.

Young has more leverage than any of those guys.

He grew up in Montreal and played hockey before focusing on hoops, so if he brings that hockey mentality to his game he'll be tough. It always seemed like our players were a little "soft" in recent years. both mentally and physically, and it'll be good to have some toughness out there, some drive and hunger.

I joined my parents and older brother touring campuses in the mid-90s. Muncie was the first place I’d ever seen (heard, really), the chirping noise to indicate a WALK sign for blind individuals.

(I recall that there were also diagonal crosswalks, though I might be making this up.)
