Belated congratulations to the Luther North girls track team that returned as champions of the 1A state meet a couple of weekends ago. Graduation of the last senior class at Luther North will be this weekend.

Last week, Queen of Peace graduated its final senior class.

Congrats to the graduates and God bless the other students of these two private schools as they transition to other schools to continue their education.

Peace closing is crazy to me. LN I can understand.

Any way you want to look at it, it's death by a thousand cuts. The smaller a school gets, the more expensive it becomes to operate on a per student basis. There are fixed costs that a school incurs whether it has 200 kids or 2000 kids.
If the school doesn't have the market base to absorb substantially larger tuition, or the donor base to pony up even more in charitable support, to cover those increased per student expenses, then it must dig deeper and deeper into operating reserves or congregational bail outs to balance the budget. At some point, it becomes terminal. In some cases, the school just bleeds out. In others, the school decides to beat the inevitable to the punch.

Peace would have closed 4 years earlier if not for Mt. Assisi shutting down first. Marist killed both of those schools.

Marist has two of its biggest feeder schools in Orland Park (St. Mikes) and Orland Hills (Cardinal Bernardin). Were girls from those schools going to Peace and Mt Assisi in similar numbers before Marist went coed?

Cardinal Bernardin opened in 2000 with no junior high student. Marist went coed in fall of 02. St, Mike's sent their girls to McAuley and Providence before Marist got involved.

Queen of Peace lost the majority of what was left of their base from parishes such as St. Bede, St. Alberts, St. Geralds, St. Marys, St. Syms etc. Those girls started to get siphoned off to Marist.

My school sent 3 girls to Peace in 7 years and we were right near all three.
