LW North snatching an OT defeat out of the jaws of victory vs WWS in Round 1 of 2014 7A playoffs.
89 after SR lost to CVS
Worse than the Kenwood game?
I was at the 89 game MC lost to Rita. It was the first time I had ever seen MC lose a game in person.
I am shocked...shocked. Am I missing something? The maddest people have ever been after a game and no mention of refs anywhere.

I was angrier at Derek for INFLUENCING the refs than the refs themselves, strangely.I am shocked...shocked. Am I missing something? The maddest people have ever been after a game and no mention of refs anywhere.
Fall of 99 the IC knights were up 13-12 heading into halftime on MCC in Woodstock. Phantom late hit on 4th and long leads to a score. MCC wins 27-13. That was a crushing loss. Not everyone has played in Woodstock.
2 weeks after shutting them out 30-0.Has to be 1993 after MC lost to De La Salle in second round for me.
CVS had DL All American Greg Wilkins and a real good LB whose name escapes me but yes, I was stunned when I heard that news...89 after SR lost to CVS
1991 LA lost to Glenbard North in the semis. Misetic, Baisley, Patton ... didn't think they'd ever assemble that level of talent ever again.
2 weeks after shutting them out 30-0.
I think DLS QB got hurt the morning of the game so this was with some sophomore. Horrible game. Rest In Peace to Jeff Cronin who recently passed away and was a Captain on that MC teamI can still see McNabb fumbling heading in for a score in the second half. I knew then they were going to lose.
Funny. First, when you have a near-50-year relationship with St. Rita football like me, this whole thread could be filled with many Mustang heartbreakers. But still so proud of the program that has competed at a pretty elite level since the early 70s.No Stagg or Rita fans that made the trip to Edwardsville are posting.
Great topic thread, I got a few, All equally heartbreaking but MC top 5
5. Losing to SCN in 2018 Semi, Tyler “F’ing” Nubin. But MC was at the 1 yard line for the go ahead score with a minute left and a mishandled snap on 3rd and a blocked FG on 4th then losing in double OT....
4. DLS loss in second round of 93 after beating them 30-0 2 weeks earlier. McNabbs senior year
3. Losing to Rita 13-7 in week 9 of 1989. Not stunner because Rita was ranked #1 but only loss the class of 91 would have in 4 years.
2. I will lump these into 1 group, all equally devestating. The JCA disasters. 1991, up 24-6 with 6 min left in 4th QUARTER vs Mike Alstott and crew.....L in double OT.....1992 semi finals, after winning 27-6 in week one, lost in the semi final 13-11 ending our quest for 5 Championships in a row. 1993, up by 2 scores with 4 min left in 4th QUARTER....lost....1994, Ever see the movie All the Right Moves? It happened in real life. MC intercepts a JCA desperation pass with 30 seconds on the two yard line. All MC had to do is get the snap and take a knee to win. John Welsh fumbles the snap, JCA recovers at 1. Time for one more play, they run it in....SCREW YOU JCA! LOL!!
1. Losing to Maine South in 1995 State Title game. This hurts as it was the year MC lost Kevin Dowling. A lot went wrong for MC that game but shame on that ref for calling roughing the kicker on that last play giving MS another shot to kick the game winner. Was not roughing. Kicker played it good. Can’t fall for that in a state game.
Reese Thomas! Thank you it was bothering me!Great post. I called my psychiatrist and she is allowing me to post my St. Rita top 5 heartbreakers.
5. 2001 semifinals at Edwardsville. See previous post.
4. 2007 26-22 loss second round at WWS. St. Rita dominated the first half and WWS owned the second half
3. 2013 20-15 second round loss to MC. Easily the two best teams in 7A that year with DGN a distant third have to meet in the second round due to quads. St. Rita up 15-13 with 6 minutes left when MC does one of their patented clock melting scoring drives.
2. 2008 35-28 Quarterfinal loss at ESL. Up 28-7 on the road. A couple of offense and special teams miscues and a whole lot of Terry Hawthorne led to such a brutal night. Both teams left it all on the field.
1. 1990 27-14 Quarterfinal loss at Thornton. Up 14-13 with a minute thirty left AND getting the ball back, St. Rita loses by two scores. Yes, you read that correctly.
Hate to get to the end of the list and miss many but (dis?)honorable mention goes to:
1985 7-6 Quarterfinal loss to BR on a 5 yard out route that goes 50 yards in the mud pit
1986 Kenwood loss.
1988 semifinal MC loss
1989 CVS loss. @McCaravan I think the LB you’re thinking of was Reese or Reece. He played and looked like Clemsons Isaiah Simmons that day. Maybe a CPS old timer can chime in.
Sadly and I guess proudly, attended them all.
All.... There can only be one for the rodent. The 1995 title game between SHG and Providence. The Cyclones by just about all of the media (especially in the Chicago area) were supposed to not have a chance in hell and get blown out quickly by the Celtics. SHG handled NLP late into the fourth quarter and lead 17-7 with a fresh set of downs. And then the self inflicted implosion like I've never seen to this day occurs. The final NLP 22 SHG 17. If I recall correctly NLP ended up ranked #10 in the nations final poll among all teams. Ratsy
I was there for that game. Memory is a bit fuzzy, but do I recall snow and/or really low temps that day? Or maybe I'm confusing that loss with the semifinal loss to Thornton the year before.
1990 ended with a desperation mid-field heave by Patton, leaving him on his back in the mud versus NFL-sized Thornton. 1991 was 12-0, going down 2 tds, unable to pass in the blustery wind.
PTSD.
How do you forget it?OMG, how do you remember this ****?

Good point about sad rather than mad.I wouldn’t say maddest, I’d say saddest would be 2015 Marist/ND and 2018 Cary Grove/ND games. Probably the best chances The Dons have had at a state championship. Fond memories of both seasons just bitter pills to swallow when it doesn’t go your way.
