I understand if maybe you let Mainord go if your new OC is bringing in a WR coach with him.

But if they have fired him because of his performance and NOT Schlarman, than Stoops is BEYOND stupid.

Well, Gran was the OC/WR coach at Cincy so unless they move him to OC/QB, we will need to bring over their QB coach which would work perfectly.

Because Mainord has very good talent to work with, and Schlarman didn't. This year will be his year to prove himself, but Mainord lost his chance when none of our wide receivers could catch a football.
Plus you let schlarman go and you would lose some very solid recruits coming in.

Manoird had the most talented group on the entire team, Schlarman probably had the worst. Schlarman is also helping bring in very, very talented linemen.

Let's face it, the WR's were hot garbage this year. You can blame some of it on the QB, but not all of it. Manoird also seemed to refuse to take out guys who were taking plays off or not doing what they were supposed to. His group was the most talented yet least disciplined group in the bunch. Safe to say that even with the struggles on the oline, if the WR's progressed like they should have, we're bowling.

It's good to see that Stoops is making decisions based on evidence and all factors, not just on a whim. Schlarman's group had guys hurt most of the year, guys were playing out of place because of the lack of depth, and it showed. However, they did improve at various positions as the season went along and they did a decent job in run blocking.

Yeast also was an assistant coach at Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio. He offered my grandson a scholarship to Tiffin.
He left Tiffin to becpme a High School Head Coach in Ohio. Craig Yeast is a class act and Heb would be a great addition to the UK Staff. His son is also committed to UK next year.

I honestly think that UK needs somebody to coach the QB's who has a whole lot more experience than Gran has. Yes, Gran did work with QB's for one year, under the tutorship of Dennis Erickson... BUT... That was as a GA, not as a paid assistant. Big difference. Plus, that is less experience than Neil Brown had coaching QB's.

Ideally, Gran should coach the RB's. He is a highly proven RB coach. However, if he's not going to coach RB's, I'd rather see him coach WR's. WR is a position that he played & he also has coached WR's a few years.

That said, I don't have a thing against hiring Yeast or Parker. However, I am hoping that if Gran is the new OC that Hinshaw is also brought in to coach QB's. Irregardless, Stoops is more aware of this whole situation than we are, so I know that he will make the call that he thinks is the correct one.

IIRC Mainord is the one who brought the "Yahtzee" into the BBN lexicon - pretty original actually. I guess that's what I'll remember him most for. His recruiting connections into the DMV were pretty promising at the outset, but those efforts fizzled out as time passed. I agree with others that he needed to go - the WR group was / is a talented group but underachieved badly.

I recall on another thread that a lot of the players (excluding Towles apparently) were happy to see Dawson leave. I wonder what the players' reaction to Mainord's firing has been? I haven't seen much discussion on that.

First time poster. How do guys feel about Coach Stoops considering the changes being made? No change, or what? I feel a tad better seeing the changes, although I still feel deflated overall.

Some changes had to happen, but this is another 2 million frittered away......Dawson and Mainord. Who's on the hook for this money lost? Stoops or Mitch?

Figuratively, Stoops. It's just another blunder in picking the wrong guy. You never know what you're gonna get when you hire someone, but the responsibility still falls back on the person that made the hire.

Now he's in a position to where he's relatively stuck with the next guy due to already being on the hook for the guy he just fired. It just makes his "leash" shorter.

If Stoops shows next year that he can get it done, then all will be forgiven.

I don't see how you can fire Mainord and retain Schlarman. Schlarman's O-Line has been consistently HORRIBLE since he has been here. Let the new OC have some say in who his position coaches are. Don't hamstring him by forcing him to work with people that are underperforming.
They have had 3 holding calls since the season has been over

Speaking of stupid, Did you notice over the course of the season how many different players played at different positions along the OL? Against Mizzou Brent Musberger noted that Starter Jordan Swindle was out with an injury and the replacement Mosier a walk-on couldn't slow down the DE Charles Harris. He even said something to the effect, " Man Kentucky just can't stop him! Put a TE over there or a RB to chip block the guy, THATS FOOTBALL 101!"

I.m fairly sure that is not Schlarmans call.

Schlarman gets unfair heat from those who probably are not nearly as smart about the game as they pretend to be doing their keyboard warrior acts.

O line failing to pass block is not just due to or because their coach sucks. pass blocking comes from the personnel put into the play by the O coordinator. Get the 5 best O linemen in the country & see how long they hold back a 6 or 7 man rush with zero tight end or back chipping help. blocking assignments are supposed to be recognized and called out by a competent quarterback reading the defensive alignment. given what a disaster Towles was this year at throwing a catch-able accurate ball how confident are you he properly read the defense and called out the right blocking assignments to his O line?

I thought we needed a defensive coach that knows how to defend the read option, clearly we couldn't defend that play the whole game against UL, It would have taken most teams about one or two times of running around our ends to correct it, we never did, why?

Stupid decision imo.

Gotta figure if Eddie Gran is the next OC that maybe they are clearing the way for Darrin Hinshaw to follow Gran with him here.

Mainord was WR coach at TTU before UK. Which is basically the most prestigious job in the country for a WR coach. You don't get that job unless your a very good WR coach. He did well there and did well here.

No doubt the WR's are better now than they were when he got here. The same can't be said for Schlarman's O-Line.

Serious question, did you watch any of our games this year? The WR corp had horrible drops all year, rumors of not trying hard for the starting QB, and just overall bad attitude. Not to mention the WR's basic lack of ability in blocking in space. It's pretty clear Mainord lost them along the way.

Here is an outside the box thought for WR coach. Mike Furrey at Marshall. Great NFL career. Hard working blue collar player. Impeccable Ohio recruiting credentials w/deep family ties to the state. Doesn't have loads of D1 coaching experience, but where did that pedigree get us this year. Just putting it out there.
