The most distinctive cause of death was the flu in Maine, North and South Dakota and Wyoming. States that are known for mining such as West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky, had lung diseases that are caused by the inhaling of specific dusts as their most distinctive cause of death.
Dying in a boat or plane accident was the most distinctive cause of death for Idaho and Alaska, while in New Jersey the most distinctive cause of death was sepsis.
In Connecticut and New York, inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs were the most distinctive.
Quite possibly the statistic that was most surprising was from the states of Oregon, Nevada and New Mexico. In those states, death caused by law enforcement, not counting legal executions, ended up being the most distinctive cause of death.
