Sayles is a young QB and it showed at times tonight but he is going to be something special if he sticks with it. Gavin extremely impressive as usual. Defense wasnt able to hold down the stretch.

Don's will be right there at the end..see them at 8-1 or 7-2 depending on how the Benet game shakes out. And getting out of 8A means they could make a little run. They are a top 6 or 7 team in 6A this year.

Caught the 2nd half online, and I agree with you on Sayles. He is very talented and will grow from this loss. I thought one of the big plays was when ND was deep in Marist territory and had a 3rd and 2. ND had a lot of success on the drive running Gavin. They called a rollout pass, and it was intercepted. I believe the score was tied at the time. Didn't like the play call. Sayles was rolling left and had to throw across his body. And why not give Gavin the ball in that situation? He was rolling on that drive.

The play of the Marist defense surprised me. They looked good. ND scored on a 90-yard Sayles run in the 1st half, a pick-six and a long pass play. Marist' defense is better than I expected. On offense, they don't seem to have found a RB. There were a number of empty backfield sets. Markette is a very good runner, and he seems to be the focal point of their run game. That could be an issue against Naz. Thompson and Skalitzky are weapons, but the lack of a running game (other than the QB) could be a problem against the Roadrunners.

At this point, it's fairly obvious that Naz is the team to beat. The ND/Benet game will be interesting in Week 4. The Benet defense will get their biggest test to date. ND does have a lot of team speed, which has traditionally given Benet problems. And how will the Dons bounce back after the loss? Should be a good one.

Sayles is also a top 5 basketball player in the state for the class of 2021. Which causes some concern about sticking with football. Hope he does though.

S ayles us a special 2 sport athlete. Enjoy him at ND till the wheels fall off!! I'm sure his college offers will dictate which sport prevails if he has to choose 1. No guarantee it's basketball over football either, you never know.

I Agree. Except I don’t think there is any intentions to go elsewhere. I hear people say things like that all the time. I think he is in the best place for him and I definitely tried to get him to come to LA when it was time to choose. Clancy and Boyle will do everything they can to help him succeed on the basketball side and I believe he and his parents know that. Football is where it will be interesting to see what happens. He is definitely a D1 athlete regardless of sport. He could be a great safety or corner if he had the mindset for it. Last I asked him, his mindset was he’ll play whatever sport gives best opportunity to go to college.

He’s been a QB all his life but he’s never been trained at it like most kids who play the position.

There were several plays, some previously mentioned, that show a lot of room for growth. Another that comes to mind, late in the 4th qtr there was a play where the refs called a PI downfield on Marist. He threw the ball to the boundary/single WR side with a safety sitting on the hash pre-snap. As everyone was clapping about the flag, I leaned over to his dad and said he should’ve never even looked to that side, let alone throw it there. It should’ve been and almost was a pick. The safety also had a kill shot on the WR if he wanted. They had opportunities to take advantage of the coverage to the field but either missed them or didn’t recognize them. To me that’s on both the play calling and his understanding of what the defense is giving him. He needs to be taught coverage recognition and reads. He also needs work on basic things like footwork. There is plenty of room for improvement and if they can do a good job working with him, watch out.

I’m one of his biggest fans and also one of his harshest critics. He’s a great kid to be around whether it’s a peer or adult. He’s humble and respectful. It’s going to be fun to see what the future holds for him.

Otherwise, it was a great game. Gavin was impressive as usual and the kid with the pick 6 and receiving TD came up big for ND. The Marist QB stole the show though. With time, it’ll be great to see Anthony impact a big game like that kid did last night.

LAguy, thank you for that write up. Great to read. From everything I've heard from my ND "insiders", you are spot on. He's a kid who just "gets it" and has embraced ND just as the ND community has embraced him. Excited to see what his future holds.
