If that is who the new OC is, I have mixed feelings. I love the pro style. I love that he has OC and head coach experience and was pretty successful for the most part. I do not like the fact that he has had some issues with players in the past. If he is the guy hopefully he has those issues corrected.

Mangino runs a spread offense. He won the Broyles Award at OU in 2000 as their OC, the year they defeated FSU for the national championship. And what he did at Kansas was phenomenal. He won 12 games there in 2007. Winning 12 games at Kansas would be akin to winning 12 games at UK. Kansas has been traditionally abysmal when it comes to football. In terms of overall experience, knowledge and ability, we could do a whole lot worse than Mangino. The guy knows how to build a potent offense.

That said, Mangino's behavior is what really causes me some concerns when it comes to hiring him. The guy is a competent and capable coach. But he has a long history of being belligerent and abusive in nature, both on and of the field. Do we really want a guy who would make the actions and behavior of Billy Gillispie and Mike Leach seem tame in comparison? I don't mind having coaches that are tough taskmasters. But I do have concerns about coaches that have the reputation of being complete and total a-holes to players and even other school staff members.

I would love to see Mangino hired as OC. Our players are too soft anyway.

Being abbusive to players doesn't make them tougher it usually just runs them off. You would think a coach that won 12 games at Kansas would be on everyone's "A" list with every coaching position open. That's a red flag when it's not. IMO.

Good to see that some of our fans already don't like him. Real Shocker

I like him just fine when it comes to coaching ability alone. The guy has done some incredible things and knows how to build a heckuva offense. The problem is some pretty serious question marks when it comes to character, temperament and even mental stability. People with a history of the kind of behavior exhibited by Mangino often have a screw loose. I don't think it is unfair to question whether the potential liabilities outweigh the potential gains.

Lol....really......on every thred about the possible new OC every time a name is brought up certain people love the dude and then a certain group can't stand him.

The person had not even been hired yet and fifty percent of the people on here hate him regardless of who it is

I don't think you'll find anybody who will deny his coaching ability. He has a proven record. He's an outstanding coach. It's his character being questioned. If there has never been a coach that has been brought into question by fans, I'd love to know who it is. I'm convinced that this happens to every coach, ever.

So let's get this right. Fans wanted Mike Leach as head coach even after he had player abuse issues, but then don't like Mark Mangino because he has player abuse issues..... What do y'all want?
so if I accuse you of something you didn't do, do you then have issues with it?

So are you saying Mike Leach didn't do it?

Well heck since we are being judged in the court of public opinion, why don't we say Mark Mangino didn't do it either...

It's amazing...

Guarantee that the same ones that believe he is the savior, will also be the 1st to start complaining about play calling.

The only pause I would have with the guy is he WON at Kansas and got fired. Kansas is a really bad football program. I know we are bad, but Kansas football is about 5 levels below us, and the guy was canned while winning.

It was proven that the James family made that up over playing time issues. Even the shed video was staged.
Yeah, I agree. The whole thing was a mess. I didn't like Craig James before or after that happened. Is that the reason he lost his TV job?

i thought he had quit so he could run for senate. but said so many stupid things on the campaign trail pretty much ruined any chance for a return after he lost.

No, leach had an issue. Singular.

Mangino has issues. Plural. A history of of them towards players, off the field, to administrators. Was just fired halfway through this season.

man given his issues at Kansas I have a hard time seeing Barnhart signing off on Mangino. But if the OC hire is already a done deal Mangino is the only one who makes sense for Stoops to move in on that fast, given the past relationship working for his older brother. He only fired Dawson on Sunday night, do you people really think he has had the time to have a lengthy interview & negotiating sessions with Bell, a coach he does not know nor has ever worked with before?

Guess Mangino could do good things here, vet coach with past history of sucess. But man the abuse allegations, that's gonna be tough for this group of dainty offensive players especially at wide receiver to accept.

holding out hope for Eddie Gran

Read an article about his firing at ku and it was decent but the comments underneath the article were enlightening. A whole bunch of ku fans felt he was not liked by some in the administration and they were looking for cause. When some players made allegations against him the ad piled on to get rid of him without paying him because he thought he could hire as good a coach who acted more "dignified" and "looked" more professional.

Not saying he doesn't have warts but in all honesty football is a physical game and some guys just can't cut it. Saban made that dude in Miami cry but he looked the part and spoke well along with being a great coach so bama looked right past it.

Bob worked with mangino as assistants at k st before bringing him to Oklahoma. I would say he knows him personally pretty well. Also some ku fans pointed out that his wife had just finished chemo and she was encouraging him to get back to coaching.

Just said on KSR that Mangino will NOT be the new OC.

Mangino doesn't coach QB's & neither does his son. Mark M can coach OL & TE & his son coaches WR's, They just are not a viable option for UK without a major O staff turnover. However, even more importantly, I still don't think that Mitch would sign off on Mangino. Honestly, I think that Mangino's name was thrown out as a smokescreen.
