Ahh yes, Mark May, the joker who made fun of Peadyshine for not looking at Callahan sooner for our coach, then made fun of us for hiring him in the first place a few years later when we canned him.
Him and Trev used to have some epic battles when they were on together.

Yes they did. That was so fun to watch. Sometimes it got so heated it looked like they were getting ready to go at it.

Go search the whole story. They only moved him off of one show onto another. You have to know they would never, ever fire Mark May. ESPN has **** in their own nest with their insistence of injecting politics into their coverage of what should be non-political sporting events. Now they pay the price with lower ratings and declining revenues...but they will never make a move that would be deemed as non politically correct!
ESPN uses negativity too much on it's shows. I've really scaled back my ESPN watching because of it. Of course I'll watch games / events on it but if I want news on MLB, I watch the MLB network. If I want news on the NFL, I watch the NFL network. College football, I'll go with the conference channels over ESPN, and so on. ESPN has almost become fake news in its own right.
I really hope they are trying to get away from the opinion based channel they've become and go with a more journalistic approach. The Mark Mays of the world have become boring. The Mark May reporting college football is almost a fictional character. I've read and herd many times that his commentary on Game day was partially scripted and his role was to get under the skin of certain teams with large fan bases. I've actually herd and read he is a good guy off screen but it was his role to fight with Trev & Lou and basically everyone else. That was his shtick. And that shtick has became tired and played out.
This was basically Herbstriet's shtick too in the past. Now he's trying to get away with it. His famous crying about the 1995 Nebraska being the greatest of all time was supposedly fake. He claims the control booth was telling them all they needed a devils advocate and Herby stood up and played that role. Don't believe that stuff? That's fine. But for a while in our country, good reporting didn't mean good ratings, so the lack of good media disappeared. People only wanted entertainment, even if it meant negativity. We are slowly seeing that people are tired of this and thank god.
It's ok to have an opinion in sports but the Stephen A Smith's of the world are a little too much.You watch MLB tonight on the MLB network. Those guys all have opinions but they arent mean or A-holes about it. Harold Reynolds tells it like he see's it but doesn't have to be a jerk about it.
I'd honestly love ESPN to lose all of it's stupid "news" shows and get back to showing more sports.

ESPN, the original, is on every cable company and satellite networks basic package. That network gets a ridiculous carriage rate in the amount of $7.21 as compared to the NFL network at $1.40 or TNT at $1.76 or Fox Sports 1 at $1.15. That is $7.21 per month, per subscriber.
They will make about $7.56 Billion in annual revenue just in carriage fees. Under their contracts with the cable and satellite companies, this is revenue they would receive whether 1 person watched or all 87 million subscribers watched and whether or not they speak about politics or not.
When you consider that just 5 years ago ESPN was in 100 million homes you can see how much is lost in that revenue stream. However as their revenues were shrinking, they were still "overpaying" for media rights. They wanted the NBA so bad that they paid 2.5 times more than what they were paying.
Later this year, ESPN is going to launch a new product similar to HBO
Now. Where you can get a portion of their live events streamed for a monthly fee.

All of that info regarding declining revenues due to shifting viewing habits by part of the population may be true, but it's still more fun to imagine that these guys are getting fired for expressing opinions that I don't like.
The ridiculous part of it all is that these firings are nothing more than posturing for the Disney Execs, just letting them know that they are doing something to "offset" the $300 mil in lost revenue. The amount of money ESPN saved in these layoffs would probably pay for maybe one half of one Monday Night Football game.
false...this just isnt politics its more about how the consumption of sports is changing. More streaming options is the biggest reason. If politics was the actual reason for any of this then ESPN would have tanked in the mid 90s when Olbermann was anchoring the most popular Sportscenter ever
50% of my desire to "cut the cord" has to do with the insane cost of paying for 80 channels I don't want (Golf Channel - really? I don't golf). The other 50% is having to pay for channels that do not align with my values. The political slant of ESPN and other stations definitely is a factor in me wanting to "cut the cord". Whether that translates into layoffs, I can't say. But rather than some ESPN turd lecturing me about (so called) AGW during the Olympics, I would rather just read a good book.
Ok so you are maybe 1% of the cord cutters. The other 99% are cutting to save costs and not pay for what they don't want.

I was at a gathering last night. Everyone in the room I was has ESPN on their current package. They also said they watch much less ESPN than they did 10 years ago. Some due to Fox sports and BTN but mostly because their programming and opinions suck, they've married to Urban Meyer/Sec/Texas and their decision to bring politics into sports.

The only reasonI ever paid for tv was to watch college football. Once the season was over, I cancelled it. Had it 2 different years back around 2007-2010.
Saving $50-$130 a month is huge for me. Yes it is only abut $1000 a year, but my wife and I have always tried to put our finances as a top priority in order to worry less about having money.
When I hear the jokes about 500 channels and nothing to watch, I feel better about our decision to cut the cord knowing that we are not missing out on anything besides conversation pieces with friends and coworkers when we don't watch certain tv series.
I stood behind my sister recently watching the season finally of the Walking Dead where the tiger showed up... I couldn't watch it without constantly telling my sister how fake and stupid it all looked. That was 5 minutes of my life I will never get back...
Also, my kids do not watch tv very much, except for cartoons on rabbit ears or Amazon Fire Stick. They might watch 30 minutes a day, but it is funny watching my 5 year old try to fast forward through commercials when she is at my parent's house watching tv. She HATES commercials and will actually stop watching tv after the 2nd or 3rd commercial break.
Now the internet is something I cannot cut out of my life and never will be able to. Tv was easy.

Linda Cohn disagrees with you, but what does she know, she only works there. Every article I've read about the layoffs at ESPN that allows commentary on it also all disagree with you.
I think you need to reread her comments.
Cohn said the Big media rights were the cause of the layoffs which is what I said in my original comments.
She then said in reference to the Bruce Jenner getting the courage award-
"You’re right. That is definitely a percentage of it. I don’t know how big a percentage"
Now as far as cutting off cable because of political slants, wouldn't that hurt Fox News or any other right leaning channel as well?
It's not like people are sitting around their house going freaking espn, that Jamele Hill so political it sucks, I'm turning off all of my cable and watching Netflix Or getting a fire stick etc. because of her.
