They'd instantly be big Oats fans if he was hired. You start to see, "He has a final four and 2 elite 8s". "Fun offense". "It's nice to have a modern coach". Because their entire thing is "I support who coaches UK". To them, the coach is the program. And not supporting the coach means you don't support the program. Therefore you arent a fan of said program. Instead of viewing the coach as like a player, or assistant coach. A piece of the program at large. There's a group of about 5-6 on this board that does this. When Calipari left, many acted like they never defended Calipari. And he sucked all along. And it was time to leave.

Well, I’d love to have Oates but I still don’t see what has changed from before. He said he didn’t want to be here. I don’t know why we think he would.
I think he’s an outstanding coach and if I knew I could press a button today to eject Pope from the chair and Oates would land in his place, I’d press the button. I fail to see why we think Oates would want this.

Rumors were floaitng Oats wasn't happy with the NIL at Alabama. Last year. IMO, you go back to him, and pitch facility upgrades, a massive NIL package, and whatever he needs to be succesful at UK. He'd get us a title within 5 seasons.

I get why the Alabama honeymoon may be over. Is there anything that makes us believe he wants to be HERE though? Genuinely asking coz he didn’t mince words about our fanbase.

He also said he kinda likes that pressure. Because he holds himself to a similar pressure. It's kinda like asking, why would Calipari take the UK job? When he can be a king at Memphis? Why would any gold glover sign with the dodgers? They have it made in their small market team.
Mitch wouldn’t hire Oats. He’s the one that fans need to be mad at if Pope doesn’t work out. Popes in a tough spot because he’s having to learn on the job to coach at this level. Mitch should have hired a more veteran coach, imo.
I know we wants the pressure, but he felt our fans are unfair to coaches. He thinks we are an entitled bunch and wasn’t praiseworthy about that aspect. I’m not putting the kibosh because I don’t want Oates —- he’s everything you want in a coach.

- Can blend high skill with high athleticism
- Can build depth without losing trust
- Coaches offense to aggressively terrorize defenses
- Has had top 25 defenses, so there’s at least demonstrated proof he can build title contenders
- Been to final fours, elite eights
- Won SEC titles
- Can recruit highly ranked players but builds with continuity
- Has built his own brand
- Shown program building chops at a dormant school
Literally checks every box except one — would he want it?
You could see the hire wasn't going to work from day one. History of poor defensive teams, not a good recruiter, legacy hires don't have a great track record, etc etc. But we got bought by "well, he cant recruit at BYU because you cant have sex there". And some youtube video on his offense. And don't forget the presser where he just evoked nostalgia. And said "You see how Calipari did this? I'm doing the opposite". And brought the 1996 team off the bus. Even Rex lifted a few ipads to pay for the ticket. Rah Rah types ate it up. We went too far to the right. You need a middle ground. Espcially in this player empowerment era. You can't tear NBA posters off the wall. You can't say "we're UK. We're not bid warring for a player". This is Nebraska football talk. Play the damn game or get out.

A friend of mine said it from the beginning he wouldn’t work here. I disagreed because I like Pope and because Pitino recommended him. I’ve wanted him to work out here really bad since he’s an alumni. I hate that we’re even in a situation that we have to criticize a guy that’s one of our own.

I changed my mind on Calipari and said he should during 9-16. He said I was a fake fan and @Wall2Boogie. He got banned and would pop up to defend Calipari. And would post threads when Calipari beat Oats. About how "Calipari beat Oats with 2 pointers". Saying modern offense and 3 pointers are a joke. When Pope was hired. It was suddenly smart and refreshing to have a coach who hunts 3 pointers.
