Pope is in a Catch 22 situation this off season, assuming he’s shameless enough to return for a 3rd season. Either he brings back most the team, who aren’t even good enough for the SEC, much less by Kentucky’s standards. Or he loses most of the team to the portal and he’s forced to start over. Problem with this scenario is he’ll likely have a poor reputation (thanks to negative recruiting by other schools and by his own actions) with portal transfers and boosters are not going to give him the money necessary to bring in a top tier team. All but 2 will be in the portal. And they are not the two we need back.
That tweet tells me he would make the perfect HS girls basketball coach.
I hope nobody laughs at this. Because we had dudes on here saying the samething in 2024. "It's actually smart to not start Reed and Rob".Now him and Leach are talking about how the start of the game isn't that important… "the numbers show… .". Gotta be kidding.
I mean, one of the biggest issues he has dealt with the last 2 years, is constantly falling way behind. What the heck does he think causes that?I hate to say this but if this is popes take then he is at best lacking common sense at worst and idiot. Every successful coach knows the team to get out the gate to a lead is in a much better position. You use a lot of energy trying to catch up that if you get there you don’t have enough to finish out strong. Pope doesn’t think all those quick leads in 96 didn’t demoralize their opponent. I’m done with this joker. Even though he played a couple seasons im on the verge of all out dislike for pope. Where I think barney is the problem for hiring pope I’m at the point where I believe pope is in league with Barney. Every AD except ours would be showing pope the door. When a guy doesn’t have it you don’t keep him around because he captained a team 30 years ago. Barney said that was a big reason he hired him.
Tom Crean would mop the court up with Pope, and that’s saying somethingWe hired our Tom Crean.
Couldn’t listen to the show, but by reading your guy’s comments about Pope’s thoughts and actions, is ANYONE still surprised why this clown is 0-28 recruiting 5*’s?
Honest question… Would any of you want your 18-20 something healthy testosterone level son around this Girl Scout Cookie selling Low-T doofus? Be honest!! Heck to the NO you wouldn’t…
But you want this guy to get a 3rd season? Are you having a good hard laugh at that notion yet?
If true, that is worse to me. If Lowe needs to sit and Pope is playing him then Pope cannot say it’s about protecting the kids. It’s about Pope screwing up, not having a backup point guard and trying to save his own tail.A guy called into the ksr show a few minutes ago with a theory on why Pope doesn’t start Lowe.
He said he's hoping he doesn't even have to play Lowe to help him heal. After some thought, this makes sense when you pair it with Pope's responses to the questions about it. He keeps talking about the injury and rehab.
I have some news for Pope. Due to the roster he created, there is a ZERO percent chance you won't need Lowe in ANY SEC game this season, ESPECIALLY in games involving Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, UT, Auburn and UGA. It’s called "common sense".
Tom Crean has won multiple regular season conference titles and has been to the final four. It’s not fair to compare him to Pope.Tom Crean would mop the court up with Pope, and that’s saying something![]()
That is THE most troubling thing about the Mark Pope era so far , for me at least. His UK teams, even last year are constantly getting behind early sometimes WAY behind, you can't beat good teams consistently when you constantly start out in the hole. He unwillingness to even acknowledge this as a problem drives me crazy. Now him and Leach are talking about how the start of the game isn't that important… "the numbers show… .". Gotta be kidding.
The other thing not starting your best 5 does is it keeps you from evaluating matchups etc as early as possible from a coaching and adustments stand point. That's an example of something that will never show up in an analytic study. If I'm a coach, I'm using the first segmet of every game for my whole staff to be watching with eyes wide open for whats happening, who's guarding who and who's struggling to guard who both ways. Who are our better matchups and whose our bad matchups and on and on. Then at the first and maybe second TV time outs I'm making adjustments. We all have our differing opinions but I disagree with this 100%. It’s absolutely not being overblown. What Pope did Saturday by NOT starting his best players is giving the entire team a “safe” and “cautious” mental approach. The exact opposite of what they should be feeling at the start of the game. What does an approach that basically says “let’s be really careful and play two or three of our inferior players a few minutes and see if we can keep the score within striking distance”. Meanwhile, our likely best three point shooter, our projected top 10 NBA draft pick AND our one and only legitimate point guard will cheer really hard that they’re not down 20 when they finally get into the game.
Guys like JQ, Cam and Lowe sit there and watch CC, Aberdeen and Moreno give up 8-10-12 points in a row and get the Bama crowd in a frenzy - THEN they’re inserted into that? Of course that makes a difference. A huge, gigantic difference. By that time Bama was throwing in everything they shot - it’s called momentum and it’s the deciding factor in most “somewhat” evenly matched games.
Do we win Saturday if the lineup of: Lowe, OO, Cam, Mo and JQ start? Probably not, but at least we would have “come out swinging” with our best pitch. If you’ve got a 103 mph fastball - don’t throw a bunch of ineffective 88 mph sliders![]()
The worst part us, he thinks it's not an issue, so he's not going to change what he's doing. That is THE most troubling thing about the Mark Pope era so far , for me at least. His UK teams, even last year are constantly getting behind early sometimes WAY behind, you can't beat good teams consistently when you constantly start out in the hole. just sucks that next year is likely going to be a lame duck season. oh wellFolks, I think we're done here. Meaning, Mark Pope was the wrong hire. Full disclosure, I was pulling for Scott Drew during the search process but, was hopeful that Pope would be an under-the-radar-hire that knocked it out of the park. Especially after last season's overachieving results. It is obvious he is NOT that guy.
I don't know what has changed or if it's just adversity that has revealed who he really is. But, he is NOT the coach we all hoped he'd be.
He won't be fired after this season because that isn't who Barnhart is. I think we'd still have Joker Phillips coaching FB if it weren't for a fan revolt forcing MB's hand. No, Pope will be here at least one more year. He'll get at least that long to fix his mess.
