Does this game tell us anything? I mean... it was nice to see that we did what we were supposed to do i guess?

Well, as you mentioned, we at least don’t walk away with negative feelings. However, I don't think you can take much from the game overall. Too many pitching changes and probably a ton of lineup changes. Even players playing that may not be on the roster at all come the spring. Marshall is also a pretty bad team, 199 in RPI last year. Glad they didn't struggle though.

Since I was at the game I am happy to share my views on what I saw. I agree that "one game does not make a season" but it was good to get a look at the team.

I feel that the past couple of seasons our outfield (especially LF) has been a little shaky overall. I would be totally surprised if that is the case this season. Jackson Gray started in LF and man all I can say is that he was rock solid out there. A welcome change IMO. Also physically Gray was impressive, a tall and solid body-type. McCarthy was in CF and made a couple of nice plays but I kinda think that Waldschmidt will end up in CF. What I loved about Waldschmidt is you can look at him and just tell he is a "ballplayer". He did a great job at leadoff, took some pitches, went the opposite way and could run. I am excited about him also. Ewell got in later in the game and I don't think he had a ball hit is way (he came in RF). McCoy (gotta say this upfront he is gonna be one of my favorite players) started at 3B and also played RF and 1B. Handled all three positions well but I think he looked most comfortable at 1B but that was just my observation. He is definitely one of the rah-rah guys along with Austin Strickland. McCoy had some really good at bats.

Grant Smith started at short which surprised me a little cause I thought Pitre would play SS. But man he was super smooth and steady. With Pitre at 2B they turned two very smooth double plays. Pitre was a star at the plate with two doubles and a triple. Later in the game Smith played 3B and made one really outstanding play there while Herrera and Felker were at 2B. I guess I am saying it looks to be a very nice defensive ball club

Pitching wise it was great to see Travis Smith on the mound. He is a very aggressive pitcher and prolly threw harder overall than anyone else on Saturday (including Cotto). They squared up a couple on him (he gave up a two run homer) but I was happy that he has made is back from TJ surgery. Moore looked like he had worked on either a curve or changeup that really froze some Marshall batters. Bosma/Cotto/Strickland were all pretty perfect in their two innings. I was really hoping to see Logan Martin pitch but he didn't get a shot on Saturday.

Stanke was the DH and caught some later in the game. He is a pretty big guy too. A real chatterbox behind the plate, a very encouraging catcher to the pitchers. Loved that he took the ball the opposite way.

Just one game but all I have to say about Lucas Schramm is WOW. He came in the game about the sixth inning and absolutely hit three lasers in his three at bats. Two doubles and a bases loaded single. He absolutely torched the ball. And he is a man, a big strong looking kid. Hard not to like this guy.

Sorry for an extended post I am sure I forgot something but that's just some things I observed. One last thing is that while I didn't look super hard I didn't notice Church. Maybe I just didn't see him. Cant wait for the season to start

Thanks for the thoughts. All of that sounds pretty positive for sure. I think Pitre will be 2B and Smith will be SS, and I hope they will both hit. Pitre lit it up this summer - hopefully he carries it through to be able to do against SEC pitching.

Depends on the HC I guess but I don't think you can take a lot away from this type of thing. As the father of a son who went thru many fall camps, it's more about getting ABs and IP. I recall guys were told to, for instance, just work on off speed pitches, changes, curves, sliders, cutters or splits or some combination and hitters were told to take pitches the other way. It's practice and practice is what they do.

Some of the pitchers had already been shut down for the offseason too (Hagenow, etc.) Martin will likely be the Friday night guy or closer, IMHO.

They are still waiting on Isaiah Byars' NCAA waiver to be approved and he'd likely be the starting SS.

That's pretty wild. Is that common or is this more precautionary?
It’s actually common for pitchers to not throw at all during the fall season.
Haven’t heard about Hagenow but I did see him throw at a scrimmage a few weeks ago.

Pretty common, especially for the guys who threw all spring, then in summer ball.

So what does that pitcher do until then? Seems like shutting them down would make it difficult for a coach to really evaluate where the pitcher is and what they can fully expect in the spring, but I get that they need the break.

In the fall my son did a lot of conditioning, running, weights(weights to maintain more than build strength). Throwing was long toss but also what they called "short box" which was 50% effort from 50 feet with a catcher and was done for muscle memory, repeat delivery, repeat arm slot, maintain balance. Generally was done both from windup and stretch. Being a LHP he also worked on his pickoff move, developed an excellent balk move, had pickoff record at one time but since has been broken. He was a starter as a freshman/soph but hurt his arm at start of soph year and red shirted. He became a spot starter but was primarily a bullpen guy last 3 years. Really, really enjoyed that as he was used a lot, is still in Top 10 for career appearances at school and that was 20 years ago. I'm sure different coaches have different routines but that seemed to work for their pitching staff.

Wags came in my senior year. Had some good seasons and they were about to build a new baseball field on campus. Weird timing with it being in the fall. Be tough to get new staff and work any transfers.

Have you heard of any updates about Byars‘ NCAA waiver being approved or what the timeline should look like for a decision to be made?
