Mateer was starting to get it before his injury. But he was used to the opposition at Washington State and at OU, he was facing much better defenses....... with a bad thumb. And a shaky offensive line, and a running back room that was depleted by injury. I fear that OUr receiver room and OUr running back room, are suffereing to many injuries, because OUr HC is so intent on finding out who's tough, that our skill people are getting beat up in practice. They talk about the value of going "good on good" a lot. I know times are different, but when I was at OU, the offense had almost zero contact in practice after a few fall preseason practice scrimmages. And we had very few injuries.
I read preseason, that Ole Miss had a similar approach, and they might be the best team in the country. We'll find out this week, maybe. I'm just glad that they don't have to play UGa in Atlanta. I believe the jury is still out on Mateer. IF he can go through next season without an injury to his throwing hand or arm, we still might yet see a great player. But has he a lot of learning to do.
