Well considering he was the best back in the scrimmage...and this is supposed to be a run heavy team...another blow.

Should have expected one of the 4 RB's to go - too many mouths to feed. From what was said on Sportsline he did this the right way, talked to the coaches and discussed with them before putting his name in. So I wish the young man the best. He gave us some great runs and was the starter last year, so it does sting in that sense. But I have no doubt we have 3 other backs that can step in with the same or better level of play.

Mathis was good but probably the 2nd of 3rd best of the bunch. Good luck to him. He did good last year and got better as the season went on. That was rare.
CJ Donaldson - stronger runner than Mathis and better receiver than Mathis
Justin Johnson - very capable to equal Mathis
Jaylen Anderson - Hits the open holes faster than Mathis
Jaheim White - faster than Mathis and can get outside better than any back on the roster.
The departure of Mathis means the loss of another veteran leader for a team in search of new ones. Aside from just the leadership aspect of it, not having Mathis to rely on puts more pressure on Donaldson staying healthy.
Without Mathis, WVU will be forced to roll the dice on less experienced backs if Donaldson were to get hurt again and miss time.
Prior to Mathis’ exit, West Virginia was going to bring all but 13 yards. Subtracting 562 yards from seems like a lot, but doesn’t factor in CJ Donaldson missed games last year.
