I have been as huge of fan of his as any ...but wow, he is really really out of whack. Hoping he gets it together as we could use “the good MM” for the stretch run

if it doesn’t come together soon For him ....for the teams sake, he is going to need to play a lot less minutes on a shorter bench coming down the stretch ....Really hurting us at time out there now when he is on the floor ....

14 minutes, 0-4 fg, two fouls and a turnover, it appears he just is not buying in the way he needs to, everything is force and almost always compounds one bad play with another. He is trying to make a big play rather than relax

its tough for RU to win in the way they want to when he is not contributing

Agreed on MM although you can say that about any player in 2021 except for Myles, Mcconnell and Mulcahy, the latter 2 who simply give great effort but don't fill the stat sheet. If and when we ever put it together on offense, we are a sleeping giant

How much shorter can the bench get? His minutes are down considerably already. We are only playing 8 and the refs let a lot of contact go this evening which limited anyone getting in foul trouble. He needs to make better decisions on the offensive end but he is still one of our better on ball defenders.

Yes I would for him to come out of his funk also. On the first 7 games he was so crucial for us and an added threat. He single handily beat Purdue this year when Harper was out.
We need him as another weapon but now sure what’s going on.

he is just a different player when certain people are on the floor. He needs to be playing with Harper, geo and Myles. He plays too often with young and it becomes a bit out of control

The lack of playing time has impacted Mathis performance. He had some double digit scoring including 3 pointers earlier in the season.

I think folks are reading into it too much. The kid has had some great games this year and is capable of putting it together. It’s pretty clear Pike likes to go with the hot hand and who’s playing well. MM might not be hot right now, but if he was, he would have seen more minutes. Pike always says it can be anybody’s night, and that’s what we need to celebrate about this team. We have several players capable of this. This wasn’t the case just three years ago.... we should understand that MM will have his opportunities and the harder he and others push in practice, the better they will be.

I think Montez is a very sensitive kid who takes it to heart when he comes off the bench and his minutes are diminshed.

The problem with Montez is that he has not fully accepted his new role and he forces shots etc when he is in the game that never turn out well rather than letting the game come to him.

At this point in the season, Montez needs to put aside his ego / senstivity and play to his strength which is defense.

Jacob to his credit has accepted his role coming off the bench which is what Montez needs to do.

At some point we'll need Montez but I could care less about his diminished role because every game there are multiple WTF moments with him.

Definitely can see him Transferring out for senior year, Jones coming in will eat at his time next year too, UConn was his Other choice.
If he transfers, I can see him going to Maryland. He's from Maryland and Turgeon looks like he needs players. I also think Montez and Morell are friendly so if Morell stays, Montez will have a good friend on the team.

Of course, I hope he stays but Montez needs to play to his strengths and he needs to mature as far as his game is concerned.

If things stay the way they are he'll transfer. Where, I don't know but he leaves. Especially if the seniors come back.

He's a great rebounder for his size and he goes strong to the hoop. Those are his plusses. He's an ok defender, but not great like some say. He needs to develop his offense and make better decisions. He has no decent 15 ft jumper so he drives to the hoop instead and gets stuffed, and he is not a great passer or foul shooter. He needs to stay on the bench this year and next until he improves and shows that he's earned the PT.

Did he tell you this? I think he stays, knowing he has to play better for more minutes. Everyone’s opinion is just speculation.

Of course not. It's just speculation on my part. But his body language is terrible and IMHO I don't think he'll be back if everyone returns. Now if Geo and JY move on that's a different story.

If you take a shot, every time MM ends up on the floor, you used to have a nice buzz going by halftime. I miss him not playing more minutes if for that reason alone :)

He either needs to learn to flail upon contact (learn from Audige who seems good at snapping his head back and getting calls) or develop a pull up jumper. I sometimes wonder if he should have gone into football, I think he would bring it as a linebacker.

Both Young and Mathis have evil twins that take up half of each of their minutes. Evil Mathis has been dominating lately.

I see a few issues with Mathis right now.

1) for whatever reason we went from a very good transition team, to a team that really struggles to finish in transition and is better off calming things down. Mathis is a thrasher who thrives on a fast paced transition offense so this change wasn’t a net positive for his PT.

2) While Tez is a good one on one on ball defender, he is not good at reading half court offense schemes and is often late or fails altogether to provide held defense on dribble penetration. Caleb’s return has highlighted this deficiency in Mathis as this is an area that he excels. It’s, of course, also more of a factor than it was earlier in the season due to point one (which isn’t only Tez’ fault) we’re defending more in the halfcourt sets recently than we were earlier in the season.

3) Tez not only making stupid turnover mistakes but he’s also following them up with stupid fouls back the other way. Those are things that are going to drive a coach crazy no matter who you are. JY does this too at times, but he’s bringing so much to the table that sometimes the mistakes can be overlooked.

I know Tez loves his teammates. I think he is having a difficult time with much less playing time. When he comes in he is trying too hard. He is still in the rotation and is an important part of the team. I think he just needs to relax a little and enjoy the winning and the journey we are on. I hope he continues to be at RU and to get a degree from Rutgers.

One of the worst finishers around the basket I have seem. He is able to penetrate but then can’t score.

For those saying he looks pissed off and his body language stinks, he ALWAYS look passed off. From the first open practice when he was a freshman he’s had the same look. The clip of him smiling for the camera after he got knocked down under the basket last year went viral in part because it was the first time anyone ever saw him smile. Is he having a hard time adjusting to coming off the bench and having his minutes reduced? Of course and he is pressing a lot. The kid has basically started every game of his career and now he’s on the bench. Not one of us here wouldn’t be affected.

That is true. It is also true that not getting production from him is hurting our offense . Tez was averaging 14-15 points a game through the first 9-10 games and was instrumental in our fast start. Coming off the bench with Jacob doesn’t seem to work. I would start him again and bring Paul off the bench so Paul can run the point when Young and Cliff come in. I do not like the 3 subs at once and rather it be done one by one . Tez has to learn to drive, create contact by putting a shoulder into the defender and remain on his feet with his head on the rim to try and complete 3 point plays. Really surprised neither Brandon Knight or Hobbs have not solved that problem yet. You can sense his frustration and losing his double figure scoring hurts us. With Ron getting the extra attention and Caleb and Geo mid range threats , TEZ early season 3 point shooting should be open all day and maybe a way to get him back on course.. We cannot afford to get negative production and play from him and sitting him is a terrible solution.
