Yeah, but most of them are at least smart enough to not intentionally commit career suicide when they have a "good" thing going. Campbell is "wired" for 8-5 in a second-level conference. Why would fry cook PSU fans want that?Because these guys aren’t wired like most of the middle managers that post here
I for one am looking forward to at least 6 more weeks of meltdowns until the new coach is named because nobody will be good enough, then an entire offseason of meltdowns because the new hire was the worst possible choice, then a new meltdown after every single loss because Franklin never would have lost that game. The histrionics are actually entertaining. No, not buying that. We will be fine. We can go 9-3 next season or 8-4. Look at the schedule! The doomsday, sky is falling is ridiculous and are the passive aggressive arguments from those who are mad because Jimmy got canned. Rhule is not my choice but is better than Jimmy. I don't think it is Rhule.

Kindof of ironic since some acted this exact way the whole time Franklin was coach.I for one am looking forward to at least 6 more weeks of meltdowns until the new coach is named because nobody will be good enough, then an entire offseason of meltdowns because the new hire was the worst possible choice, then a new meltdown after every single loss because Franklin never would have lost that game. I am just shocked he is still there. Maybe he was smart and instead of jumping for every paycheck he has waited for like an Ohio State, Michigan or Penn State.Nick Saban was wired for 7-4 at MSU during his tenure there … he turned out OK at a bigger program
Nothing ventured nothing gained. Every great coach wasn't great until he was.I am just shocked he is still there. Maybe he was smart and instead of jumping for every paycheck he has waited for like an Ohio State, Michigan or Penn State.
Look when you fire a guy who has won 11, 11 and 13 games, unless you are getting Nick Saban everything is a risk. I like Campbell. But again, it is a risk and how will he do under this microscope. Pressure crushes things, it also makes diamonds. Who knows.
Setting up your arguments for the new guy failing already….get out in front of it.16 of 22 starters on a 3-9 to 4-8 team. I will gladly get rid of this dead weight....looking at you, Durant, DDS, Deluca, Harris, Allar, Singleton, Dinkins, Shelton, Allar and whomever I missed. Oh and I hope the door does not hit AK and Knowles and Trautwein and Hagans and all the other useless coaches sans Smith and possibly Poindexter as they exit stage left.
James the players coach who averages a stellar #13 in recruiting classes. So overrated as a HS recruiter. We will he fine. Perhaps a rebuild of a year but even at that I think we can go 8-4 or even 9-3. Have you seen our cupcake schedule?
The thing I find amazing are all these Franklin fanboys that are irate Jimmy was canned even though he couldn't win a big game if his life depended on it. They were happy being OSU's bixxx every year and I do mean every freaking year. Now the new guy comes in and God forbid he goes say 8-4 with a depleted roster and needing to rebuild and these same fan boys will be up in arms bitxx up a storm "I told you Jimmy was better". They sit there and would wait forever for Big Game James to lose, lose, lose, wait for it......lose lose again to OSU but will want to can the new guy if he goes 8-4 in his first year despite them predicting the first year will be a rebuild.
With what players exactly? So we can go 8-4 based on our schedule when we don’t even know what players we will have…so apparently, some of you think just putting on a PSU uniform is enough to beat most teams….somebody’s pretty entitled. Saban was pretty mid at MSU. Back then who would have thought he’d become “Saban”.Nothing ventured nothing gained. Every great coach wasn't great until he was.
Weak
Well, then, let Campbell leave Iowa St., take the helm of a historically poor performing club in a top conference, let him prove that he can win consistently there ... and then blue blood PSU will give him a shot ... and a bagman. Boom. Saban 2.0.Nick Saban was wired for 7-4 at MSU during his tenure there … he turned out OK at a bigger program
????? - ok then have a nice day and let's see who PSU hires. As opposed to the strength of "You two people, who have nothing in common and don't like each other, should get a room ... because I've recently suffered acute brain trauma. Loud noises!"
If the fans “forced” Kraft to fire Franklin he should be given a pink slip so he can sit next to them.Surely looks like it. The only thing that makes sense to me is that the fan base forced him to pull the trigger. It was unsustainable for recruits, players and coaches to go into Beaver Stadium and be consistently summarily booed.
The issue now is what will be left of your roster for the next coach to work with. If you are looking at recruits for 26 they are all moving on, largely because James was a players coach and because their position coaches are in limbo. Add to that that the writing is on the wall for both coordinators and recruits are rightfully concerned about their future. Oh, yes, add to that that you will be losing 16 of 22 starters to graduation and/or NFL and you can see what a miscalculation this may be.
In my opinion, this was an ill-timed decision even if warranted.
Location and resources probably a factor there. Not the easiest place to recruit to either I suspect.Saban was pretty mid at MSU. Back then who would have thought he’d become “Saban”.
Do you think the whole team leaves or what? Do you think the new coach brings absolutely no one with him? We don't use the portal despite having a lot of money? The new coach who we pay $10-12 mill a year has no clue how to coach? How negative and doomsday can you be?With what players exactly? So we can go 8-4 based on our schedule when we don’t even know what players we will have…so apparently, some of you think just putting on a PSU uniform is enough to beat most teams….somebody’s pretty entitled.
Sexton almost certainly was behind arranging the Gameday interview for Franklin (kind of obvious), but the less obvious part is he also probably arranged the narratives and the questions that were allowed to be asked. It wouldn't shock me at all to hear that Sexton told Saban to make PSU look bad in order to prop up Franklin as a candidate for the slew of jobs that will be open this year.Who's the most powerful man in college FB? More powerful than network TV or shoe companies? Jimmy Sexton. He makes Scott Boras look amateur in comparison. How is this good for college FB if not anti trust violations. He is the puppet master pulling the strings and this dude this offseason is going make millions upon millions. A list of his coaches former and current.

I also think the fan reaction played a part in the timing. Without the toxic home atmosphere I think Kraft could have worked with Franklin to at least play out the season. But you can't let that kind of atmosphere linger unless you are confident the team bounces back and wins some big games, which seemed very unlikely after UCLA and NW. Letting that continue at home games also could have hurt recruiting, I think Kraft had to do what he did, when he did. Franklin seeming zoned out and the team's performance kind of forced it.Surely looks like it. The only thing that makes sense to me is that the fan base forced him to pull the trigger. It was unsustainable for recruits, players and coaches to go into Beaver Stadium and be consistently summarily booed.

With the portal a roster can be filled out immediately, provided you have the funding. Kraft isn't stupid, he knew there would be recruiting fallout when firing Franklin. Part of the funding package he needs to pull together has to include a larger than usual sum to get players from the portal during the transition. I'm sure he's aware of this. My numbers may be slightly off but are directionally accurate... IU's roster had 31 players from the portal last year and 18 this year, and they are a playoff team. The portal negates the affect of poor recruiting if you have the money to use it.With what players exactly? No AD worth his lunch money is taking Saban's comments into account (there are ADs not worth their lunch money and PSU has had a couple). Sextonis smart enough to know it. If such a conversation did take place, who is going to divulge it? Sexton? Saban? Miss Terry?Sexton almost certainly was behind arranging the Gameday interview for Franklin (kind of obvious), but the less obvious part is he also probably arranged the narratives and the questions that were allowed to be asked. But but....Sexton could also rep the next coach. And certainly as the dominoes start falling, he is going to reap the rewards. In business, it is almost bordering on conflict of interest and other improprieties because he can control the market.Sexton almost certainly was behind arranging the Gameday interview for Franklin (kind of obvious), but the less obvious part is he also probably arranged the narratives and the questions that were allowed to be asked. I am not a James advocate, so have no dog in this fight, but if you believe that filling the job of a coach who was fired after winning 13 games the year before and taking you to the final four will be easy you have another thing coming. 9 and 3 or 8 and 4? With what players? Your 26 recruiting class is toast, you only have one serviceable QB (who may transfer), and the roster is depleted. They will need to buy second tier players in the portal to fill the roster, even if the next coach brings some players with him.No, not buying that.

And who will that be? Kiffin, Drink, Brohm, DeBoer, Elko Lea are fantasies. Why would they leave programs where they have been wildly successful to go to Penn State, win 70% of games played, and get fired for one off year and because you lose against a team 90+ per cent of all other teams would lose to? Maybe if they go with an untested coordinator, someone like Matt Campbell (I think he would be stupid to take it), or Rhule or Schiano. Maybe a Group of 5 coach?
I am curious to see where Penn State ends up next year. I think Franklin will land on his feet (already being mentioned as one of 4 candidates for Florida (dont think he will get it) much quicker than Penn State rights the ship.
I want Campbell… he makes good soups!
Agreed, But there a different variable working here. Revenue share was not in place when Cig left James Madison and brought his senior laden roster with him. With it in place, programs with the talent PSU will covet will have the financial ability to retain the top players on the roster. So, as many analysts have articulated, top talent will stay if they are playing. The ones who will leave are the ones who are not seeing the field or want more playing time. I also do not know what the price tag will be for a complete rebuild, recruiting for 27 (I think 26 is shot), stadium build, an entire staff change out. The good news is that Franklin will likely have a job this cycle so the offset will be negligible. With the portal a roster can be filled out immediately, provided you have the funding. That would be a great job for him. Much less pressure in the ACC; he will do wellJames may end up at FSU.
Fired for one off year? That's an exaggeration. PSU is well-known as a relatively stable place to coach, more so than many other places (e.g., Florida) and is a job that doesn't open very often. We've had maybe 5 full time coaches since WW2? Franklin was given 12 years, despite getting slammed by the media about his big game struggles for at least 5 seasons. PSU was more than patient with him and is likely to be more patient than many of the other big programs with the next guy.I am not a James advocate, so have no dog in this fight, but if you believe that filling the job of a coach who was fired after winning 13 games the year before and taking you to the final four will be easy you have another thing coming. 9 and 3 or 9 and 4? It starts with mmmm and ends with "O!"I like Progresso. All the best soup names end in 'O' according to someone I used to know.
Says the non fan who doesn't care if Franklin loses every big game (actually is quitealright with him losing every big game) but is sure Penn State will be worse off. Edit... hopes PSU will worse off. Flush. That would be a great job for him. Much less pressure in the ACC; he will do well
I’m too lazy to look it up. Hard to say considering we don’t know who the coach or the players will be. A schedule is only “easy” if you’re better than the teams you’re playing and we don’t know that yet. And if we hire a coordinator, then no, he won’t be bringing players with him. If we hire Ruhle, we easily could lose 8, 9, or 10 of those games.Do you think the whole team leaves or what? Next year:
Marshall
at Temple
Buffalo
at Maryland
at Michigan
at Northwestern
Minnesota
Purdue
Rutgers
USC
at Washington
Wisconsin
So are we losing what 8 9, 10 games?
That’s assuming you get good players in the portal. Again, no one knows what kind of players we would get because we don’t even know who the coach is yet. All I’m saying is assuming 8 or 9 wins based on our schedule is quite premature and is definitely a potentially bad situation for any new coach trying to deal with our entitled fan base. With the portal a roster can be filled out immediately, provided you have the funding. Penn State has had three coaches since 1966 (and one of them left on his own)…what other schools have that kind of patience?I am not a James advocate, so have no dog in this fight, but if you believe that filling the job of a coach who was fired after winning 13 games the year before and taking you to the final four will be easy you have another thing coming. 9 and 3 or 8 and 4? Is he losing that many hams at Nebraska?Hard to say considering we don’t know who the coach or the players will be. He lost 11 at Baylor and 7 at Nebraska, so yes and close. Is he losing that many hams at Nebraska?
Very few. It has been an exceptionally stable job. My question is how stable it will remain given the expectations surrounding this position in 2025. Franklin came in when the program was in shambles. He managed to put it on a very solid footing but could not get it over the hump to elite status. He was given every opportunity. But if the standard going forward is to improve on what he did, the implication is that 10 and 2 seasons are not acceptable if those losses are "big games." This would be challenging to say the least.Penn State has had three coaches since 1966 (and one of them left on his own)…what other schools have that kind of patience?
Maybe it is time to start acknowledging Penn State is not Ohio State or Alabama. And you can't win it all, if you aren't at least in the hunt which Franklin had this program. That being said, some of the gameday coaching malfeasance was mindboggling at best, criminal at worst.Fired for one off year? That's an exaggeration.
