Matt Elam is the worst defensive lineman I have ever seen with his size.

The kid simply has no explosion...I commend him for losing good weight and is a huge person. But he's just not quick nor explosive...just stays blocked by the C and doesn't command a double team.

You could say pretty much the same for all our D-lineman. No explosion off the ball at all, very rarely able to get penetration.

The only thing I saw him consistently do was pull his jersey down after the play was over. When you have a terrible defensive line like this, no wonder why Barker looked so good.

I think he cares more about how his uniform looks than giving actual effort.

The worst part is his attitude. He acts like he's the man. He hasn't done anything. Just another highly rated KY high school player that looked good playing horrible competition.

The worst part is with all the $ in college athletics now, these players are treated like studs around town even at a losing program like UK. They have fancy facilities, get tons of free clothes and gear, etc. They all think they're stars. When did football become a sport where everyone is pampered?

P.S. Maybe he can also stop running his mouth about past coaches before games.

He doesn't

in his stance!

What a JOKE -- he looks like that 250lb. 3rd grader that can't even get in a stance and the coaches won't correct because they're afraid he might quit.

Elam played EXTREMELY disappointing tonight. He did not command a single double team that I saw. His best play was in the 1st quarter where he stunted and actually hurried the QB. Other than that, ONE Southern Miss OL handled him with ease.

He changed his technique by doing the following: he doesn't put his hand down until about 3 seconds before his snap. I'm guessing he does this to conserve energy since it is too hard for him to be in a 3-point stance. He also cannot get down too low because then he just cannot generate any upward push. He is simply so large and stiff that when he reaches a certain point he cannot get up anymore.

At this point in his UK career he SHOULD be dominating one opposing OL, to the point that the opposing offense at least heavily considers putting a second OL on him. He doesn't have to command a double team on every play (ideally he would), but he needs to be disruptive enough that the opposing OC at least thinks about it.

I think back to the comment either in the spring or at the start of 2 a days where someone said "Elam is destroying the OL." It is clear he destroys no OL.

People look at him and the fact that he was recruited by Bama and assume he was in line to be the next Mount Cody. Perhaps Saban cooled on him for all we know.

I'm beginning to think it would be better if he would just stand up

I'm just wondering if Elam has the talent to work with and our coaching staff has no clue how to teach the game or what. You have to assume the kid has major upside or i doubt Sabin and Bama offer and show so much interest in the kid. If Elam is playing on defense at Bama instead of Kentucky, i'm thinking the kid would most likely look like a totally different player. I hate to even think like that. It doesn't help recruiting to think like that, but what can you do at this point?

He could have quite well of been destroying our OL.

How can you be 360 pounds and get pushed around by a 280 pound center. They ran right at him all night.

It's called leverage.

The lowest man always wins. Elam cannot get down low enough. He can only stand up and gets tired easily. The opposing OL will gain leverage and either push him back or hold him at a stalemate.

I think Saban dodged a bullet on this one. On one hand, I am thankful that Matt committed to UK. On the other hand, I watch him and think the best he offers is a standoff with the opposing center. He never gets any push.

You are forgetting Bama doesn't play by the same set of rules UK or most other teams play with. IF Elam had gone to Bama, he would have already been processed out of the program and been at some small school or back home working.

I couldn't see UK's game because I don't get ESPNU, but apparently he is still the Elam he has been. Before he signed, watching his HS tapes it was pretty clear he was a huge kid who just overpowered kids he lined up against. But we was also clear he wasn't very agile or flexible, he was very awkward and it has really hurt his development. He doesn't seem to have a good explosion out of his stance. But being as tall as he is has also hurt him.

i had tape broken down for me from when he was in high school playing against highlands. They played hurry up and made Elam look like an absolute joke. Couldn't believe he was rated so high after watching it.

It looks like he is about to take a dump on the field when he tries to get in stance. Looks like me taking a crap in the woods. He could just roll around on the ground and have a bigger impact. Of course then he probably couldn't get back up.

Alabama gets Harris and we get Elam sounds about right. It's gonna be a long year. Watching that game, when we went up 21-7 I knew we would freakin blow it. I'm still pissed at 615am Sunday morning

The only difference from last year is that he remains with his hands on his knees during most of the pre-snap count and then goes on a 3-point stance with 2-3 seconds remaining before the snap. If you look at last year's film, there were lots of times where he was in a 4-point stance.

Being in a 3-point stance may be uncomfortable or difficult for a guy like Elam. Also notice how he cannot get down low and explode forwards and upwards. He is just too large and not flexible enough to do that.

That being said look at the first quarter film. A couple of good stunts and display of above average speed.

That is just pathetic. No effort at all. He's just sleepwalking through the game.

FWIW, I agree with others here that it seems like he's been put at the wrong position. Looks far more suited to play on the offensive line than DL. But he won't do any better at OL if he doesn't start giving more effort. The sort of soft lazy-assed approach he took to yesterday's game is never gonna cut it at any position.
