Carey is a pretty big dude. Could easily play the 5 and insert AOC or Jack for more outside shooting.

I like this team!
No Baker?

Great to have him on board. How did he do it? I was at the gym with like 3 different tornado warnings blowing up my phone, completely forgot about this.

Watching his highlights he reminds me a little of Chandler Parsons during his Florida years.

Which also shows he and the Duke staff had an inkling if Tre coming back a few months ago. Hurt said that would be his deciding factor.

This is a big pickup guys and gals. The next two seasons at Duke will look a lot different than the last few. You’ll see some really good shooting Duke teams for a bit. And K had a good team this year to work and tweak his 5 out. I’m sure we’ll see more of it, but there will be some changes you can bet.

I just hope we use our bench a little more (I hope that’s one of the changes). I would love to have constant pressure on the ball.

Gonna be very freshman-heavy. Not necessarily great D beyond Tre.

I know we’ve gone in a lot about this. This past season, we had 8 guys average 14 mins or more. Goldwire was at 8.6 thanks to his boost at the end of the year.

10 guys saw at least 10 minutes in ACC/Postseason play. If guys are good enough they’ll play throughout the season and a solid 8, if healthy will carry Duke into the tournament as usual. The nice thing is, instead of unproven freshmen and sophomores in abundance on the bench, it will be made up of juniors and seniors who have seen significant minutes.

Regardless of how many play and how many minutes they average, the depth will at least be the type of quality that people have begged for.

I don’t agree. Tre, Stanley and Moore will all provide very solid perimeter D. Boogie will help too. Maybe a little better than last season even. On the interior, I worry about shot stoppers a bit, but Hurt can block shots and Carey rebounds like an animal. A lot depends on how much Jack and Javin play and if Ques returns.

As a whole, this team could have the best defensive depth K has had since there were two Plumlees on the roster.

Yeah I know I’m bringing up a topic that has been crushed to death... with all this talent.. practices will be intense.. figure at times it’ll be:

Tre v goldwire/boogie
Wendell v alex/Cassius (if we land him)
Hurt v white
Vernon v baker
Bolden (if he returns) v javin

And I’m sure I’m forgetting someone

And I will add Dude1.....ball pressure up front will hide other defensive flaws. When teams have a hard time getting into stuff, plans go out the window.

That lineup is certainly huge, but I think they would have a hard time playing K's man-to-man. I would like to see some combination of two of Hurt/Javin/Bolden/Carey on the floor at a time so there can be another athlete on the wing - someone like AOC, Boogie, Stanley.

Outside of Jones, who are the starters people feel you could write in pen at this point? Carey would be the next name I would think, but there are potentially a lot of bodies available in the post (but a freshman Carey is likely to be the best of the bunch). When people talk about the quintessential characteristics that normally typify Duke, depth is not one of them, but this group has a lot of guys capable of minutes. It will be very interesting to see how this shakes out. I think it has been awhile since Duke only one of two "guaranteed" starters coming in to a season, even with freshmen-dominated teams.

IMO AOC is the off man out...he will either accept a small role or hit the road...again my opinion only

It will be interesting. Jones and Carey will be fixtures in every starting lineup. I personally think it will be Jones, Moore, Carey, Bolden, and one of Ellis/Jack White. Probably unpopular opinion to think White can start but I’m hopeful he can turn it around this offseason. Hurt off the bench but used heavily. Javin & Stanley logging plenty of minutes. Carey will need to work on conditioning and I just can’t see Hurt guarding the other team’s 3 (or worse their third guard) - he is just too much of a stretch 4. If Bolden were to leave, Hurt starting at the 4.

Carey is going to play Center for the most part with Bolden backing him up or splitting time. Think Jav fits much better on the court with Carey. Playing Carey and Bolden together would clog all driving lanes and can’t be played like we did Carter and Bagley.

We’ve got one heck of an offensive line up with Tre, AOC or Boogie, Wendell, Hurt or Baker and Carey and a really great defensive line up with Tre, Goldwire or Cassius (or both), Jav, Ques and White.

Will be able to go 11-12 deep and have confidence in all of them.

Hurt's starting. Coach K didn't put in all the time he did personally recruiting Hurt for him to come off the bench.

Carey and Jones are the other two locks to start. I'd say I'd bet anything on it but I don't think it's even remotely a question frankly.

I don't see many similarities there other than height and race.

Parsons was a better athlete, passer and ball handler. Hurt is a better shooter, scorer and rim protector.
How can you say Hurt is the better shooter, scorer and rim protector he has yet to play one college game. I thought his defense was an area he needs improvement . I don’t see a lot of blocked shots in his high light videos.

Can a few in the know give an evaluation of this class so far? I'd be interested to hear your takes.

No question....Hurt's dad was quoted as saying K could see Matthew being our leading scorer, and getting lion's share of minutes....
