Max Dean Appreciation

Max wrestled one helluva tourney. He showed he can handle the big/tall guys.

I'm guessing he will get the #1 seed at Nationals, redeemed his only loss and beat everyone else.

We still will have 4 #1 seeds, that helps folks. There are a couple of coaches out there who practice seed protection.

What do the gurus say?

Agree. Max wrestled a heck of a tournament. The key is don’t listen to any outside noise and improve on his performance. As Cael stated they train for Nationals not the big ten tournament. Let’s all improve over the next 10 days.

Willie on Twitter went a little crazy about all the MFFs at the conference tournaments.

It started during the B1G tourney, after the 174 competitions, when he tweeted:

shortly thereafter he posted this as a reply to a question about all the forfeits:

He followed those with these two tweets:

Then he had this reply to an idea I've seen for several years -- don't announce allocations until after the conference tourneys, as that would remove a lot of the supposed reason for forfeits:

More from Willie on the subject:

I did get a chuckle when Jayden Eierman and he got into it over the subject:

Mason Beckman seemed to indicate part of the issue with forfeits -- who really knows the health of these wrestlers, but Willie wasn't having any of it:

Willie had a strong point with this tweet:

Another good point:

And another interesting tweet:

Continuing (and wrapping it up) ...

Our old pal Hawk In IC tweeted:

To which Cody Godwin replied:

To which Willied replied:
"What a f* pus** stance. good god. wtf is happening ..."

Willie didn't use f* or pus**, so I'm not posting his tweeted reply -- just quoting it.

It really was interesting to follow all of this on Twitter.

sorry if I took your thread off in a bit of a tangent from the Max Dean appreciation.

I was quite impressed with Dean in the B1G Tournament. He answered any doubts I had about him from the season.

What makes it even more interesting to me is that the "reports" I was getting about Dean over the summer/fall from the room was that Beard was beating him. I didn't post those reports because 1) I couldn't get any confirmation from a 2nd source, and 2) I figured the coaches would allow it to play out and pick the best guy for the position by the end of the season.

Bottom line, some coaches go duck hunting with healthy kids, some won't, I think that's called maintaining the integrity of the sport.

Admirable to hold things in like that, I need more practice.

I'm fine with talking about duck hunting, son-in-law is into that, the real sport. I heard the rumors over on the Hawkeye forum about Cass ducking Gable and I did post it with the idea that I didn't believe it. I must say that the vast majority on the Iowa forum were pizzed off about it. I didn't check back to see what they thought after it actually happened.

Simple solution, you MFF, you goto bottom of seeding at Nationals. Eliminating a kid is harsh, docking his seeding seems fairer. If you are really hurt you should not be seeded as high, if not hurt you get penalized for ducking.

Do coaches get bonuses for where the team finishes in tourneys? Just a hypothetical, but say a team is locked into, say, 3rd place at B1Gs, there would be no incentive to risk his wrestler getting hurt for Nationals money wise. If coaches don't get bonuses, disregard this.

I really like Max Dean. Great attitude, humble hard working young man! Seems to me he's still learning and stretching himself to learn new moves and improve. I may have mentioned that a recent former pastor of ours (young guy, good guy) babysat both Gabe and Max Dean when they were kids. Their dad was the HS football coach and according to our pastor and was a really good dude. Our pastor wrestled one year in college at Baptist Bible College in Clarks Summit PA at 197lbs. He said he filled in at a 'need weight'. I suspect all of those programs had 'need' weights. We watched a few NCAA duals along the way. He's moved on to bigger pastures from the flock here in Amish country.

ALL of this needs to be taken with a grain of salt though, as our pastor is a Michigan Wolverine Football fan...

Hey Willie, Jason Nolf says HI. Honestly, we don't Kneed you around here. 🍻 Good natured kidding of course. Your make good points.

Back to Max, what a wrestler and and even more impressive young man. Totally grateful for the process and respectful to the sport. All our guys who were interviewed....wise beyond their years. Classy young men. Of course we know Brooks is a super respectful young man. Props to Amine too. I missed all the other speeches so I am not omitting anyone just because they are not PSU guys

I wouldn't have been surprised if that were true - Beard seems a little more offensive and successful on his shots on his feet. Must have been some good matches!

I’d like to say that the “ducking” the Brands boys did was a crime. It ain’t good for the sport.

I really like Max Dean. What a great addition to the team. Hope he joins his brother as a champ.

Lived just east and then north of Lowell where the Deans were from. Friend of mine was the high school principal when the Deans were there. He said the family was top notch not only in wrestling but even better in football. Great to see a local kid doing well for PSU.
