Fourth and Fifth place teams getting in the playoffs? This will allow those tiny 1A schools down east with terrible records back in the playoffs, thus lowering the ADM numbers even lower? Fourth place seeds are now guaranteed to get in. This will shake the ADM cutoff line to the likes we have never seen in my opinion.
I crunched the numbers last night based on last years adms and how I projected each 1a team to finish the year in terms of conference finish, as well as which wildcards would be selected based on the current maxpreps adjusted rankings and surprisingly the cutoff was exactly the same as last year. Rosewood was the smallest 1aa school and Community School of Davidson the largest 1a school. Obviously this will change once this years adms are released but I was still surprised what little effect the new seeding rules had on the cutoff line.

The only thing that I saw is there will be a few really weak teams get in now over some more deserving teams but it was nothing to crazy. My numbers and projections had four 4 win teams (Northside, Louisburg, Union Academy and Pine Lake Prep) miss the playoffs in favor of a 2 win South Stokes team (because of 4th place finish in Northwest Conference) and a five 3 win teams (Rosman, East Columbus, Polk County, Washington County and Union) but every team with at least 5 wins in my projections made the playoffs under the new seeding format.

Im still a little confused on how the NCHSAA plan to seed Bear Grass Charter and Columbia since it's a two team league. Thats going to have to be addressed before next season, Bear Grass and Columbia need to be forced to join another conference for football or be told they will no longer be eligible for the playoffs. Much more deserving 1A east teams are going to get shafted in seeding because of it. In my projections I treated it like a split conference, with Bear Grass making the playoffs as the winner of there "league" and Columbia not making it in even though they technically finished 2nd.

Not sure that forth place is guaranteed.

  1. Each conference gets a set number of automatic qualifiers. Conferences with 1-4 teams get 1, 5-8 gets 2, 9+ gets 3.
  2. If it is a split conference, each classification gets at least one automatic qualifier. Two teams that finish 1st and 2nd overall in the conference from the same classification will automatically qualify.
  3. The rest of the field will be selected to fill the remaining slots in the bracket by comparing the highest finishing, non-automatic qualifying team in each conference based on adjusted MaxPreps ranking.
Then...
  1. Split teams into east and west.
  2. Seed all 1st place by MaxPreps ranking.
    1. The highest finishing team in its half of a split conferece must finish in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place overall and/or have an overall winning percentage of .500 or higher in order to be seeded as a #1. Otherwise, the team will be seeded with all other at-large teams.
  3. Seed all 2nd place by MP ranking.
  4. Seed all 3rd place by MP ranking.
  5. Seed all at large teams by MP.

Based on the current rules, I would think that Bear Grass gets a #1 seed since they won their conference. They would just be the last ranked number one seed.

So I just looked up Beargrass on MP and it says the play Columbia the next 3 games in a row. Is that accurate?
