Maybe bowls aren't as popular as they used to be...

But the Pop Tarts Bowl drew 8.7 million viewers while the Golden Globes had 8.66 million.

And that is why it's unlikely that bowls are going away any time soon.

It also provides some interesting insight into the kind of money that college football generates. It's not semi-pro. It's major league.

Interesting. Neither BYU or Gt has a really big fan base. I wonder if the fact it was the 3:30 game on the Saturday that really opened bowl season so a lot of people were watching bowls all day contributed?

I'm surprised the Golden Globes drew that many viewers.

I don't get the award shows at all. A bunch of rich people getting together to arbitrarily give each other awards. I'm surprised they get 10 viewers.
I'd be more interested if it were a bunch of rich people who had actually accomplished something in life through intelligence or hard work and they got up and talked about how they did it. The Golden Globes and Emmy's and Academy Awards are a bunch of fairly stupid people who play dress up and make believe repeating words someone else thought of and wrote down for them to memorize.

When my daughter was younger and she would start talking about an actor or actress that she really liked, I would always remind her that when they were in middle and high school, they were the weird people in the drama club.

Bowl games are glorified exhibition games. That's especially true with all the players opting out of bowls. I have not watched one yet. I don't watch pre-season NFL exhibition games either. They all are "so what?" games.

None of these comparison viewership numbers establishes that bowls are as popular as they used to be.
