MC 37 SV 7 - terrible atmosphere for a game

While the Robert Morris stadium where St Viator plays is very nice, the atmosphere Friday night was awful.

It was senior night, and only 80 or so of their fans showed up. By contrast, MC had three times their crowd. We gave louder applause to their seniors than they did. To be fair, their crowd eventually grew a bit, but not by much. The split-the-pot only paid $200.

I felt badly for their kids. Reminded me of the last game we played against Weber at Hanson Stadium. We were up 52 - 0 with a few seconds left. They tried a field goal and we were all rooting for its success. Sadly, I don't remember if it was good or not.

Very sad! I was so shocked by their crowd I snapped a pic. What a sad showing of support for your team on senior night nonetheless! And this team is going to make the playoffs if they beat Carmel Catholic next week, it's not like Viator is an awful football team!

I feel for coach Archibald as his Father was classmate and good friend of my Father's and he is doing good things at Viator.
It seems worthy of a re-post from what I put on a different thread earlier this week.
Think of this picture next time a fan or two of a school(s) XYZ gets on the EdgyBoard to complains about the team that they support not getting respect or coverage the poster believes is deserved --- charity starts at home.

**************************

SWAG Numbers here:
* 40-50 school administrations and school communities (not coaches) in the state are consistently committed to the sport.
* 200 or so school administrations and school communities (not coaches) enjoy the ride if it comes their way.
* 300 school administrations and school communities (not coaches) go through the motions.
They all have one vote on policy matters and that has delivered unintended consequences instead of the objectives ever-changing policies aimed to address.

Looks like a Akron Zip game. Beautiful stadium, zero fan base.

They have a home field don’t they? I swore they did....regardless it was a dead crowd, especially for senior night. They were 4-3....they had about 30 students there, most of were gone by Mid 3rd Q

Forest View has been their home field for as long as I can remember. I played there in ‘90 and ‘92. It shouldn’t affect their crowd, because it’s not like it’s far away from their campus. I’ve seen several games there, versus Holy Cross and Hersey, and they always had great crowds. I wonder what the heck is going on, because that picture is crazy. Senior night, not terrible weather, and playing a heritage program... should’ve been a full house.

Perfect weather for fall football last night!

I watched a Viator game at Forrest View (same stadium pictured above) in 99 to see Payton and in 00 to see Basanez and there was not one empty seat in the place, including people standing a few rows deep in the end zone.

That team last night had some talented kids, and it’s a shame to see the community let them down with that kind of support!

It is very likely that word got out that I predicted a Mount Carmel win by the score of 38-7. (This can be verified in the ESCC/CCL thread.) That resulted in Viator fans staying away from the game. I know I was off one point. I am working on fine-tuning my system.

Wilmington - Coal City will have a bigger crowd for the soph game Monday night...There were no seats available on the visitors side by halftime of the freshman game...

Are you talking about Senior Night at St. Viator when Walter Payton was there because his son was the senior QB? If so I was there, they played JCA, but I don't remember what year that was.

The place was packed that night but we didn't know it was their Senior night until the ceremony started. I think it was only a few weeks later when Walter's illness became public knowledge.

Honestly, that crowd doesn’t stand out as being that tiny or sad. In the last 10 to 15 years I would gather that the average Friday night crowd for a suburban football game is a fraction now of what it was in the late 90s and early 2000s. There are still a few games with nice crowds. But by and large most of the atmospheres I have seen the last few years just aren’t the same.
