Interesting trade. My Niners fan colleague is jazzed about it. The question is which CMC they get? If he’s healthy and productive, then he fits nicely into what they do on offense.

yeah, it could go either way. If he stays healthy this season and for several seasons thereafter, then a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th this year, and a 5th in a different year would be a good trade for the Niners. If he's injured a good chunk of time (as has been the case for the past few years), then the trade would be a bad one for the Niners.

NFL GMs have gotten pretty wary about giving up a lot for RBs that have mileage on their tires, especially those that have been injured.

The Niners have been operating with a "running back by committee" system for the last several years, so this trade (which appears to jettison that strategy) is somewhat surprising. The Niners are not giving up any first round picks, so the risk is not great. If McCaffrey can stay healthy, it may work out well for both he and the Niners.

I think they made a good move to get him. Anybody can get hurt or bust. At least this guy has shown he's capable.

The Niners are not giving up any first round picks, so the risk is not great. If McCaffrey can stay healthy, it may work out well for both he and the Niners.

I also read that the Niners have a surplus of third round compensatory picks for losing coaches in recent years. That likely offsets some of the draft pick cost of acquiring CMC.

This bucks the trend of NFL GMs shying away from big money RB contracts. CMC is only 26, but he's been high utilization in college and the NFL. He isn't your typical 26 year old in terms of mileage.

This deal comes down to his health and availability. I'm always in the "buyer beware" camp when teams trade away superstars. There's usually a lot of baggage that comes in those deals. That feels like a risk here.

They had to see this coming. It’s a total rebuild and they received a bunch of picks as compensation that could help turn things around. It took several years but look what the Jets and Dolphins have been able to do, mostly through the draft. The Panthers weren’t going to all of a sudden become contenders relying solely on McCaffrey and his injury history. Both sides seem to have won this trade.

You can’t build a team around a RB anymore. They’re going all in on a QB in the next draft. Get that piece right for the first time ever (?).
