“Spoke to Steve Pikiell a little bit ago. Will have a story up soon, but you'll hear first:

Pikiell said he is not expecting Caleb McConnell to be available on Thursday against Michigan due to the back injury he sustained during warmups for the Wisconsin game. McConnell did not practice today and won't practice tomorrow. Pikiell would not rule out McConnell completely, leaving open the slim possibility that "maybe he wakes up and feels great on Thursday," but admitted that "right now, it's not looking good."

"We'll see what happens, but if we had to play today, he wouldn't be able to play. Back injuries are tough." -- Fonseca”

Michigan is much more athletic than Wisconsin. Much important to this game and Penn St than last weekend.

Wonder what his issue is. Spasms don't keep you out that long. I don't want to play internet doctor but if I had to guess, I'd think it's something like a herniated disc.

This has been an issue for Caleb before in the past . These back injuries do not usually miraculously disappear overnight He will more than likely suffer this same type problem the remainder of his playing career and life. If it is not a herniated disc with rest , therapy and meds ( naproxen) or even possible epidural might speed up the healing process . We need him badly regardless of those who overly criticize his scoring. Caleb is the difference now to Rutgers making a decent seed or perhaps failing to make the NCAA Tourney as we have all expected. Mawot was bad luck. Caleb’s back is NO LUCK.

Hope Caleb gets better quickly, but being a Rutgers fan, I’m expecting this to be the kind of injury that keeps him out for awhile.

This is a matchup based minute distribution.

If Michigan goes with a big lineup like they did late in the MSU game with Reed and Dickinson, then we have to counter with Cliff and either Reiber or Woolfolk.

If Michigan stays with a traditional lineup and spreads the floor, then we can go with a mix of Palmquist vs Joey Baker and play more Simpson to matchup with PG Dug McDaniel.

Spencer would have to trade 3 point attempts with Bufkin. And Mulcahy because he's 6'6', would probably draw Terrance Williams (if Jett Howard doesn't play).

Jett Howard is a major problem in any event, he takes and makes tough shots. Not having Caleb if Howard plays, is a major issue.

Hasn't Terrance Williams been out with an injury as well? They have another freshman Tschetter who seems to be a regular in the rotation right now. Another good sized kid but a better matchup for the likes of Dean/Oskar.

Dickinson likes to pick and pop for a 3 at times and while he is fairly proficient we may have to pick our poison. Under any scenario a W is a tall order Thursday night but more difficult without Caleb. If they shoot it well we are probably done. We need to try and control the pace of this one.

Caleb had back issues last year too. He would always wear the belt during warmups. Not a quick and easy injury to heal from. If anyone’s tweaked their back or just lift something the wrong way knows what I’m talking about. Hopefully it’s just spasms and not a herniated disk.

Your scoring projections are overly optimistic. The team has been averaging 62 points since the Michigan State game and will be playing Michigan without two starters who are the best defenders.

Makes the Wisconsin win even more important.

Hopefully we see a speedy recovery for Caleb…I’m sure what he’s going through is pretty uncomfortable/painful.

Early this year we proclaimed that we had a deep team and that seems to have disappeared. Next man up. Hope Caleb returns soon but only when deemed medically fit.

Depth does tend to disappear when you go down two players.

He was hobbling around in Wisconsin. Wouldn't be shocked if he is done until Big Ten Tournament. Hoping for best for him. I don't quite understand how he blew out his back in warmups.

Back injuries are screwy things. I’ve barely moved and threw my back out. I’ve also been on my back for three days unable to stand up and could play basketball on the 4th day. They can come and go abruptly and sometimes it’s a matter of getting the inflammation under control whereby the pain dissipates and things shift back to normal.

Dogged a bullet against Wisconsin. Tough to do again. I get the felling some posters think we are better without Caleb. If so, that would be a very incorrect thought.

Not sure why anyone would think a team would be better off without the DPOY and arguably still the best defensive player in the conference. We not only have to score baskets to win - we also have to prevent a more talented team from scoring baskets.
