Memphis has been trying to get into a P5 conference for 4 years now but nobody wants them. They have tried 4 straight years trying to get into the Big 12 and they were once again rejected. This time is was a unanimous no from all Big 12 members. There are multiple reasons they are being rejected.

The biggest problem that they won’t be able to solve is the crime in the city. Conference members admit that Memphis would not be an attractive destination for fans. Unfortunately for Memphis that is not something they can solve over night. It is not even a problem they have worked on solving.

I don't think that is the problem. Memphis is a really fun town to visit. All sorts of night life, restaurants, blues clubs, etc. Crime is a problem, but that is a problem everywhere, not just in Memphis. If they really want to join a P5 conference i think they are going to have to get some legislators on board. And I'm not so sure UT would like that.

The Memphis crime problem is one of the worst in the country they are ranked as the most dangerous city in the US according to US News. They are ranked 25th as the most dangerous Latino city in the world according to US News. I was listening to the sports channel in Memphis last week on channel 600 am radio. They were talking that one of their main problems crime in the city and that was according to Memphis officials.

It’s obvious the Big 12 doesn’t want them that was their 4th rejection by the Big 12 in 3 years. I don’t think they have a chance of getting in the ACC, B1G or SEC. In Tennessee the rest of the state doesn’t want anything to do with Memphis so I don’t see legislators coming forward to help them. Their biggest donor Fred Smith just passed away.

Hard to believe the reason is crime. I mean they have an NBA team. I've been to Memphis several times without issue. Its the same as any city, just know where NOT to go. Same even in Louisville..

It is not the same in every city Memphis is a **** hole. Coming to a city and spending 2 days does not give enough time to experience all the crime. I had friends come to Memphis from Maryland to visit Graceland which is the biggest tourist attraction in Memphis. They were told by the Graceland staff and the police not to go out at night.
The only parts of town that are really safe is Germantown and Collierville. Having a sports team doesn’t make the city safe there are quite a few cities with professional teams that are on the top 25 most dangerous cities list.
