I agree but Jordan Dingle was ahead of him on the depth chart. Michael was a highly rated 4 star but we can't play them all.

So let me get this straight.....

Our coaching staff works very hard to land a highly rated recruit that has the size, speed, attributes to help us... but we don't use him enough so he loses interest and goes somewhere else?

Sounds exactly right. Ever wonder why we're mediocre?

We were all pretty excited to see what he could do. I was surprised when he wasn’t the starter against VT. I will say, Hunt is bad, but he doesn’t have near the ceiling Smith does. I’m fairly optimistic Mo Brown can be a damn good player going forward. Love his mentality. Tyler was getting some recognition in the preseason for added weight and adjustment as well.

He came into fall camp with some injuries and fell behind. Just hasn’t been able to move into the rotation as much as he wanted.

Crazy thought, but is it possible he just wasn't as good as his recruiting hype?
He wasn’t even halfway through his sophomore season. There are two seniors and a junior all with a lot of experience on the depth chart. It’s pretty clear Hunt is the starter right now but Smith was going to most likely step into that role if not this season, then next. Next year at tight end looks totally different now. Have to hit the portal probably.

slow footed- listed at 6'6" but doesn't look that tall at all. Maybe 6'3". Also seems like Beams indicated work ethic lacking earlier in the season.
Another 4 Star bust. Could be O-line at root of this problem too.

Disappointed to see him go, but at some point coaches have to draw a line in the sand. If he’s still on scholarship and presumably still attending class, Beamer could deny him the redshirt year, tell him to finish out the year, or reimburse the school for tuition and NIL payments.

Really! I've never heard that one before! The second a kid requests to redshirt is the second he's off the team! Which would mean he's off scholarship, totally, in my opinion!

I wouldn’t jump to conclusions too much with the guy. We don’t know what his thought process was or the circumstances around his decision to do this. It’s his life.

I would hold off on a dismissal. There is a slim chance he has other reasons to take a redshirt year, and still return to the team next year.

I can't think of any beyond injury or still needing to physically develop.

But in those cases, the staff would be making the decision with him.
