Name that is brought up the most for the HC position is Jason Nolf. Him and Jordan Burroughs...
And he had one big guy I believe he was Mongolian. Ben hasn't forgotten how to wrestle. He hasn't looked like himself lately but I'm not giving up on him.
Jason Nolf is not ready to be a D1 head coach he's never been a college coach he just started coaching kids recently. Assistant coach sure but not a D1 head coach yet
He's gotta get stronger and he needs to find some offense. I can't see his current style - no offense - that we've been drilling into him this past year getting him anywhere near AA status for at least a couple years. 17 of the top 20 wrestlers at 97 are returning next year so he's got some work to do. He beat #20 tonight, but lost to #21, #26, and an unranked guy from NC, all RSFR. So again, he's got some work to do, and hopefully the new coaching staff will get him where he needs to be. Would be nice to see him and DeLuca get off to a good start.

Was a little worried about an Ayala pin in the final match. Rare though that Iowa wins AND I cash in my fan hedge.
Many of us, myself included, are frustrated because our guys aren't showing any life, aside from Mikey, Drake, and Gabe during his one-takedown post-match celebration. We're not singling out Ludington. However, since you mentioned it, yes, he beat the 20th ranked guy in the country which would be pretty cool except for the fact that the same way he won tonight was exactly how he lost to the 21st, 26th and 45th ranked guys earlier this year. And I don't blame him as his offense looks like most of our starters' and backups' offense...non-existent. I'm just frustrated that we are where we are...and that our offense caused us to lose one of our valued contributors who took the Burlington dive earlier this evening.
Agreed. That’s a crazy take lol. I can’t imagine being critical of a wrestler getting a tech. Let alone a 5th yr sr, 4 year starter, two time finalist on senior night. I’m glad I stayed to watch him and Cali perform one last time.
as much as some may be disappointed with this team Drake and Cali have almost always been with the price of admission. I’d happily give those two a standing O again and again.
I could not believe he chose to cover like that and not sprawl.. Thought his legs were free enough to put a lot of pressure on him and avoid danger. The fact that he bailed out and went for what I would consider a desperation defensive move (given his positioning) tells me that he’s either not healthy, it’s a head issue, or both.
At this point i doubt we see a healthy BK at any point in his career.
Damn, forgot about Cash. LOL! And yes, Warner was very solid, but his style was also hard to watch at times. But boy did that guy always show up in March!
Seriously, we've got a couple hammers (Mikey and Drake), who like SB last year refused to convert to the Brands' no offense, hope for a Hail Mary in SV style of wrestling. But the rest of them just drank the kool-aid and forgot that at one time they could actually get TDs and score points...even in the first and second quarters. I'm expecting an announcement from Beth later today. Surely she's not going to wait until B10s or NCAAS to announce that we're moving in a different direction. The fans need something to cheer about and that would be a good start...to know we're getting a fresh start next year. TNT are Iowa legends, always will be. But they've systematically taken some perfectly good kids and turned them into the most boring lot - and frankly the biggest group - of blood round hopefulls in quite some time.
Solid win but I don't buy that 103 degree temperature BS for one second. He wrestled like he always does and he got us a good victory.
He was a number one pick by the Raiders...that doesn't mean he's going to be a great NFLer; it means that Al Davis was still controlling everything despite the fact that the game had passed him by 20 years earlier...
I didn't say he was; I just informed the gentlemen of the names that were being thrown around. I truly have no clue who would be the best option or what they've been doing. The only thing I do know is that we now suck...and I think as long as we bring someone on who can relate to kids and keep our program moving in the right direciton and bring in a staff who can train kids in modern techniques that include some offense we'll be much better off than we are now. And I don't think having been a college coach matters as long as you have the right tools and the right assistants. And please don't tell me that I don't know **** about coaching or that I don't understand how this works or that works, because the reality is that I don't and I know I don't.
PK was ranked higher than Keegan O Toole coming out of high school. Not sure if many remember, his first match of his career was against Mikey Labriola. He bumped up as a true freshman and lived on his legs IIRC, just couldn’t finish. Was undersized but it was a very promising match to see as a fan. And that ability to get to legs has since disappeared against the best competition, which I blame the coaches for.

16 pounds is not a huge difference when it comes to heavyweight, and you cannot convince me that if he really bought into becoming a top contender that he couldn’t put on another twenty pounds. We’ve seen many guys do it in the past but we continue to make excuses for Ben as to why this is IMPOSSIBLE for him. And him coming out of that scramble and then just walking his hips back in was inexcusable imo.
Announcing that you are firing Tom right before B10s and NCAAs ain't happening. That would be a terrible strategy. How do you think the guys would perform knowing they had a lame duck head coach? Beth is smarter than that.
About the same they are performing right now. Whats the difference its NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Tnt will be back next year.
That's why I'd love to see us get new assistants like Nolf, Kem, Hall, etc., with Tom giving them freedom to teach. Couple years under their belt, one takes over. Move Terry to HWC, maybe M* to some new recruiting-only role if possible. But if for ANY reason this scenario isn't possible, hard not to get on board with those arguing it's time to start from scratch and take our chances we get an exciting new HC.
Tom doesn't seem like he could handle being an oversight type coach, more of a micromanager. He has a hard time just sitting in the corner watching the matches without yelling direction for every single position and move. I have often thought it has to be distracting at times. If your guys are coached up they should know what techniques to use and when already and only need an occasional input.

For every cherry-picked comparison like this, there are probably plenty in reverse. Talent evaluation is hard and complex, but we need to upgrade our model. I've loved PK from beginning to end, heart, toughness, no quit, but I never felt like he had an 'elite ceiling'. Even if a different program might have gotten him to take 1 more step, his mind, body type, and style is what it is. Very solid, not elite in today's landscape. You mostly get what you recruit.
But I'd take Kennedy in my foxhole any day!!
I understand frustration, but you are way out of line.
And if that is indeed true, whether because of control (which I wouldn't respect) or loyalty (which I can respect), the more reason Beth has to pull the plug.
100% on this. Cael is a statue with no emotion and the assistants give guidance to what they are seeing. It is controlled and methodical. Watching TNT is something from Looney Tunes. They are high strung and passionate, but you have to let the match breathe.
Understatement of the year. I get frustration and accept normal criticism of a wrestler's performance, but some people (many more besides just the one you responded to) on here are just despicable individuals who need to be drug down to the bridge by the entire wrestling community and get taught a lesson in basic human respect. I'll take 10 PSU trolls over people like this.
If that's true, #1 it's sad, mostly for him of course, but it's not fun to watch either. I love the fact he's an Iowa City kid and a dual sport athlete committed to the Hawks, hate being critical of him particularly because of those things.
But when the large majority of the team seems to be going in reverse, and you're looking for bright spots that aren't there it's just a bummer. I hope at some point Ben Kueter gets it together and can give us all the middle finger for doubting him.
Clearly something is off for him, hope it gets turned on again at some point.
