As usually has been the case through my several visits to Thomas Jefferson, I enjoyed watching a game down there....The field sits down in a bowl somewhat, so the view of the field is perhaps one of the best I've seen for 1A Football for both the home and visitors...
As for the game, Thomas Jefferson dominated the line of scrimmage and time of possession in the first quarter while limiting MICS to only a 3 and out with the Gryphons' QB scoring twice for a 14-0 lead which they carried to the break...MICS did have a couple of 2 Qtr TDs called back due to holding penaltys, and Thomas Jefferson also had a 3rd Qtr TD called back for holding....Thomas Jefferson QB McMullens scored twice more in the 3rd quarter to give the Gryphons a 27-0 lead before MICS QB Marcus Graham passed to Elijah Burris who navigated his way for about a 25yd score...Graham then scrambled and made a great pass for the 2pt conversion to make it 27-8, but Thomas Jefferson answered with a early 4th Qtr Nomi McMullens' pass for a TD to basically seal the win for the Gryphons....MICS did add a late TD, but the game had already been decided by that time....
My overall evaluation of the two teams is that Thomas Jefferson is a Senior(17) dominated team that is led by a very talented Jr. QB in Mcmullens who runs and throws very well....He will need to get bigger and stronger for his Senior season if he wants to play at the next level, but he does have the skill set to do just that....The Offensive and Defensive lines of the Gryphons are good with the Offensive line very good with the Center and both Guards being Seniors who work well together....The RB Lane has a low center of gravity, and runs the ball hard, and seems to be pretty stout...Provided the Gryphons win next week to finish their first unbeaten season as SPC Champs, they will be at home for most of the playoffs with a likely BYE in the first round...
As for MICS, I counted at least 6+ times last night where the center either snapped the ball too high or too low for the QB who was in a shotgun formation all night, which really made it tough at times to get the play right....It was a bizarre scene when the Assistant Coach and the DE had a rather heated exchange after the DE/LB was called for a deadball unsportsmanlike penalty on TJ's first drive of the game which resulted in a TD run by the QB....There's no doubt that the QB Graham and RB Burris are talented, but the Gryphons made the Raptors defense look very suspect as I don't remember the Gryphons punting but maybe once or twice in the game, and the Gryphons basically dominated the DL of the Raptors who just didn't have an answer for the scrambling ability of QB McMullens...MICS is dangerous if they can play with more discipline, and can open some holes for Graham and Burris....They do also have some big and talented WRs, but just seemed as though they had trouble finding them last night, and I guess that you could credit the Gryphons' defense with that as McMullens who plays FS also had an INT for the Gryphons in the 3rd Quarter...
On a personal note: Congratulations to Coach Jerry Cash who picked up his 324th career win tonight as the Gryphons honored a Senior Class who will be remembered as Conference Champs, and provided they win next week, will go down as the first undefeated regular season team in Gryphons' Football history...
