You can send 6 attached and not have it count as a date for the team.
Why send starters as unattached when they have backups going as attached ? That’s the part that confuses me
Seems based off of corbys answer to my question above it seems Rutgers didn’t want this to count as an official date on the schedule so they are rolling out a Skelton crew
The limitation only applied to the number of attached, right? However, I seem to remember something about unattached wrestlers having to pay their own way.
I’m still confused why some guys were chosen to go but others like Pinto and Olivieri were left out.
I'm pretty sure that is the case.
A few things I can think of: Maybe Olivieri is still on the naughty list, they can only send so many without it counting as an official date and/or as a far off thought, dare I say Goody is trying to protect seeds for the tourney?
They need to enter a different tournament. Just read a post where there is only 1 top ten wrestler in the entire tournament. Our guys can't improve or at least truly test themselves without good competition. I'm sure Goody isn't a fan of the Brands, but the competition at Soldier salute would probably help the team more. Such a shame of what Midlands has become.
The Midlands are a shell of its former self. Seems that the national duals may have impacted participation.
Of the guys currently registered, Shawver is the highest ranked ranked 33lber, Clark is the second highest rank at 149, the highest ranked wrestler at 157 is # 25, # 17 is a true freshman and the highest ranked at 165, SCW and Cotton are the top ranked kids in their weight class, and at heavyweight the best three wrestlers including Catka are ranked 21, 23, and 24.
Hopefully some more wrestlers register so our guys can get some good competition.

It really is a shame what the midlands has become.. I remember when it used to be the salty splatoon with even graduated wrestlers coming back to compete to see if they still got it. National duals is good for wrestling, it actually forces wrestlers… to wrestle and for something meaningful. Midlands has been on the decline for a while now.
I think PSU has shifted the meta with load management. You can clearly see how many more matches Cael wrestled in his era compared to today’s.
He spent 5000 of team funds to buy gear for the team from his wife’s business and the school has a deal with Nike and Nike isn’t happy about it so he’s screwed and going to lose his job
Illinois head coach , he was 3x AA, 2x Finalist and 2x Big Ten Champ in college
ON a side note, this was over 5000 dollars spent on wifes company merch (pOeta)

Poeta is a great coach and has saved Illinois, this whole thing is Nike being the big bad bully , whining about 5000$ for a wrestling team when they make billions a year on the back of child labor. I think he had some custom gear made for the team ( which Nike isn’t going to do for Illinois wrestling , and if they did would charge 50k)
probably wasn’t Nike. Most likely CLC or some other vendor for branded merchandise that is a member of CLC. By skirting around CLC Poeta is avoiding the royalty that the college collects for any branded merchandise purchased and potentially resold, and buying through his wife makes it looks even more suspect, as I’m sure this was a non bid agreement. At the end of the day I’m sure it’s not some huge financial transaction but a rule I’m sure Poeta is aware of and knowingly tried to go around

All the tournaments are underwhelming. Cliff Keen used to be solid as well. The sport convinced itself that nothing matters until March, so no one is wrestling until March and shocker, no one is watching until March.
The sport is dying and the people who have the power to change it are accelerating its death. Cael is the biggest problem with the sport and most coaches follow his lead because him and his team are the best. You can’t have the best wrestler/coach of all time essentially telling the wrestling community that nothing matters until a 3 day tournament, and then telling the world it’s not his responsibility to improve the sport.
LMAO the sport is dying? wrestlers are better then ever, NCAA viewership is higher then ever , Womans wrestling is the fastest growing high sport in the country (male or female) boys high school wrestling just hit a record high in participation, RAF has completely blown their intial profit and viewership projections out of the water already. There are more ways to watch wrestling then ever before.
Cael is the guy on the record breaking 77 match win streak, in the midst of legendary dynasty who just put 7 out 10 guys on a world team and brought over an Japanese world champion but he’s ruining the sport bc Penn State doesn’t go to the Southern Scuffle anymore lol. His job is to develop his guys and help them reach their goals of ncaa and world championships and he’s doing an A+ plus job at it. The reason these in season tournaments are down is bc injuries and wear and tear are higher now then in the past bc kids are specializing in one sport earlier and training harder at a younger age. Is Cael supposed to sacrifice his teams and athletes goals to improve the sport ? should he be like the Brands and overtrain his guys down to the bone so they peak as sophomores and start falling apart limb by limb after that .Howd that work out for Poz?
If JB came to here tomorrow and implemented the same training and wrestling practices as Cael we d all be praising him as a genius and not a damn soul would be saying JB is killing the sport and needs to save it
in college football what’s more important then making the playoff? In College BBall what’s more important then making the tournament ? In college baseball what’s more important than making the college World Series ? Should Kirby smart just schedule the teams ranked 1-10 every year to improve the regular season viewership? or should he focus on getting his team in ready to make a run at a championship year in and year out?
it’s not Cael or any other coaches job (in any sport) to ”improve the sport” whatever that means. If Knox comes here will you be up in arms if he doesn’t wrestle 40 matches a year and instead focuses on winning an ncaa title?
