He should work on a face up jumper from the foul line. He I s a decent shooter from that range. That is player development, would help him if he plays over seas professionally.

Also should be doing the mikan drilll every day and shots from each block.

Should focus on his inside foot being above the block when posting up.easy jump hook if he turn towards the backboard. Curls toward the middle of the lane will be easier and can use the rim to shield the defender.

Has improved his footwork with regard to lobs off of screens with the guards

Have to think about his career after NU. That's what the coaches should be doing and the new staff seems to get that.
Thanks for that. I am taking Little Hungry to the gym today so we can do the Mikan drill.

Very good point and your suspicions are correct, Young had a total of 4 dunks the previous 2 seasons. Nicholson has 17 dunks already this season, but is only 8 for 23 on close non-dunks. So he has not been a good finisher when he isn’t throwing it down with 2 hands.
I wonder how many of those misses have been MN's maddening one-hand tip in attempts off missed shots. I think he probably gets credit for a rebound and a shot attempt on those flailing, awkward plays. You're huge. Just grab the ball with both hands and either pass it out or go back up strong and dunk it. I love MN's improvement, even since the start of this season, but that habit is driving me crazy.

I feel the same way. He does tip the ball a lot. Sometimes its good, like when he can't grab it, but reaches sideways over people and just deflects it away from an opponent. Thats a big (hidden) plus. But Tapping rebounds back at the basket when he could grab them and presumably get fouled or dunk it is a problem.

He's got plenty of time in college to develop a face up jumper from the free throw line, but IMHO that has to come after he has gotten substantially better at the rest of your post. There are only so many hours in the day and he's got so many other more important things that need significant work to reach his potential. The coming summer is a great time to start work on that shot, but it isn't really even a point of emphasis in the pro game.
Baby hooks and shots inside of 8 feet are fine... but a face-up jumper is really pushing it. Gotta be realistic. I'd rather have the coaches say "Look Matt, if you get the ball and think you might be able to dunk it, try to dunk it, regardless of where the defender is. I hate the layups from two feet.

Maybe he just doesn't trust himself to dunk with one hand?

Maybe Hungar is the person to do this, but Matt has a decent stroke from the foul line.

Have him come off a weak side screen to the foul line if he is open shoot it. He makes a couple brings the other big up to him, that opens up more space for the others to drive to the basket

Try it a couple of times. If it does not work go back to the other stuff

I am 100% certain that we have never set a screen to try to free Nicholson anywhere on the court.
It seems obvious to try down by the basket. But we have never done it once.
We just don't set many screens off the ball.

I never liked box to box screens. Don't get enough movement.

You can do a screen the screener on the wing and that would get him open cutting to the box or down low.

Anything that involves Matt having to go into his shot while on the move makes me very very nervous.

LOL, have to think down the road. That may come in handy.

Jackson Davis got eaten up by the bigs from Arizona. He has no shot outside of 10 feet.

But we can start low post baskets....
