Missing on woods sucks

This squad is sitting pretty good. Woods would have been a luxury allowing PSU to RS Bartlett but then what to do when he comes back in 2023/24... By the way, who on the squad is currently eligible for an Olympic RS yr besides the champs? Would Brooks take two yrs off to focus on Freestyle and the Olympics? I do hope they RS Haines. They don’t need a AA at 157 next year.

Getting Woods would have been a luxury as said above. If RBY returns, PSU will return 4 champs and a high AA in Kerk. Kerk improved this year and Gable is gone, so HWT is up for grabs. A healthy Kerk will be right there for the top spot. Also, Howard should return to stabilize 125. Throw in Van Ness and Haines/Facundo to the mix and the PSU lineup will be just fine. In Cael we trust.

Missing out? We have a quality kid that should be at 41 next yr, another who should be starting at 49 and yet another at 65. Along with robbie back at 25 and the other top kids at the other weights, I think we can be very grateful for what PSUwill be putting on the mat next yr.

Agreed, he is a luxury for PSU. We will still be the team to beat even with Woods to Iowa.

I will add that Real isn’t REAL serious about winning a National Championship if he chose Iowa over the Cael Train.

If you were expecting wood and didn't get it, yeah, that would suck.

Wish the kid well. Let's hope he doesn't get beat up like this year's version of the Hawks turned out to be. I can see wanting to be on a contender, but Stanford's staff is as good as Iowa's. Maybe it is a simple as not wanting to deal with Stanford's grad program while wrestling. Super talented young man.

It is weird. I hate the "new" college athletics, allowing guys to move around at will but I also support the athletes having the right to do so. It was too one sided for too long.

I think Penn State will be fine without Real Woods. Nice grab for T & T to rebuild their roster.

So what would have happened had we gotten Wick last year. It would have been a blowout at Nationals, why people would start hating us like they hate the Yankees.
Beau moved up to 149 for the team, he deserves a shot at his more natural weight. Iowa may have improved its team on paper, but they burned a lot of shirts on the road to losing. Trust in Cael.

Woods won't get better at Iowa, and may get worse. I like our team as it is. Let Iowa try to catch up with free agents.

Wyatt Henson has entered the portal.

Wouldn't it be cool if he gets to wrestle Woods?

I think that’s the point. People are already criticizing Henson for backing down from the challenge. But if I’m Henson, I want to wrestle, and I want to face Woods in a match that counts, not just in practice. And if I could get NIL money to wrestle pretty much anywhere else in the country and to show the world (and Iowa, in particular) that I’m better than Real Woods, then why not?

This is no different than PSU bringing in Max Dean. Cael did what he feels obligated to do, which is to do what he feels is best for the program. And I wouldn’t fault Michael Beard one bit if he went elsewhere. But the unique difference may be that Michael Beard feels that it’s in his best interest as a wrestler (and perhaps on the whole) to stay at PSU. I commend him either way.

We always trust in Cael. He by far the best coach at PSU & best wrestling coach by far in the country.

These NIL deals need to be better regulated, they are ripe for corruption, big donors become middle men for coaches.

I am reminded of a day in between sessions at Nationals back when Gable was coach of Iowa. I was in a booth sipping a beer and waiting for food. In a booth next to me were some Iowa gents, not kids, older people. There were dividers between the booths so we couldn't see one another, but my hearing was still pretty good at that time. I heard, "they will never be able to trace the car from the dealership back to us." Something to that effect. Wife and I just shook our heads. I know it is bad to make assumptions and I'm not, just reporting what I heard.

Iowa is buying kids to beat PS. They might but it will be hollow to their diehard fans except a few

Nice article that sums up the chaos, which is only beginning

NCAA can’t regulate too hard because they risk being sued for violating antitrust law, so they’re stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Iowa or others can pay $1M a weight, and it might win them titles. But our advantage against that is Cael’s program and coaching, and the entire infrastructure surrounding it, which can’t be matched. We’ll see if that advantage can keep us on top.

I understand, but don't like it. Sort of like why people either loved the Yankees or hated them when they bought titles and now there are more teams doing it other than the Yankees. The small market teams like the Pirates have pretty small odds of being able to compete. The smaller market baseball teams may end up losing their teams just like small market wrestling programs may lose their programs. I see bad things coming from this and I don't see how it gets fixed.

What about the smaller wrestling programs that will get dropped? Something needs to change about the portal when big programs poach from small programs. Make them sit out a year or something?

As others have said, I don't think we missed out in this instance. We already had the guy we want on the team. Beau has been wrestling up a weight class and doing pretty damn good, qualified for Natty's and scored a point or two. He'll be a factor at 141. Think of Stevan Micic in reverse; finished 3rd at 133 in the 2019 NCAAs, then he wrestled in the Olympics in 2020 at 57kg/125 lbs, but when he bumped up to 141 for this NCAA season really struggled. We have the opposite with Beau, who held his own at 149 and wrestled the top guys really tough/close and now will be dropping to 141. I'm predicting a high podium finish this coming season as his horsepower will now be in line with his competitors. His skill was always topnotch. Couple these things with the top 3 guys leaving the weight class and things are setting up really well for Beau in 2022-23.
